Sandy beaches are highly dynamic systems which provide natural protection from the impact of waves to coastal communities. With coastal erosion hazards predicted to increase globally, data to inform decision making on erosion mitigation and adaptation strategies is becoming critical. However, multi-temporal topographic data over wide geographical areas is expensive and time consuming and often requires highly trained professionals. In this study we demonstrate a novel approach combining citizen science with low-cost unmanned aerial vehicles that reliably produces survey-grade morphological data able to model sediment dynamics from event to annual scales. The high-energy wave-dominated coast of south-eastern Australia, in Victoria, is used as a field laboratory to test the reliability of our protocol and develop a set of indices to study multi-scale erosional dynamics. We found that citizen scientists provide unbiased data as accurate as professional researchers. We then observed that open-ocean beaches mobilise three times as much sediment as embayed beaches and distinguished between slowed and accelerated erosional modes. The data was also able to assess the efficiency of sand nourishment for shore protection. Our citizen science protocol provides high quality monitoring capabilities, which although subject to important legislative preconditions, it is applicable in other parts of the world and transferable to other landscape systems where the understanding of sediment dynamics is critical for management of natural or anthropogenic processes.

Mudbank is a unique phenomenon observed along the south-west coast of India among all the Indian coastal regions during the Southwest Monsoon Season. The scientific reasons behind the formation and its persistence are vague. Mudbank is considered as a boon to the fishermen of Kerala, as they are getting reasonable catches during the occurrence of mudbanks using indigenous boats from the calm sea, which otherwise is in a fury during the rough Southwest Monsoon Season. Since the region, the Arabian Sea, is significant as a carbon sink due to its very high productivity because of different coastal ocean features, variations in the smaller and highly restricted coastal processes due to climate change can have a significant impact on the rates of global warming. Here, we consolidate the previous publications on various aspects of mudbanks with the reports of the occurrence of mudbanks on the south-west coast of India. A model for the prediction of the formation and location of mudbanks, inclusive of all the intrinsic and extrinsic parameters involved, through an extensive study is much relevant as far as the socio-economic and food security significance is concerned. Here, we discuss the most conducive factors for the formation of mudbank and its characteristics with special reference to Alappuzha, where the frequency of occurrence of mudbanks is maximum among the Indian coastal regions.

Shoreline changes are of great importance for evaluating the interaction between humans and ecosystems in coastal areas. They serve as a useful metric for assessing the ecological costs of socioeconomic developmental activities along the coast. In this paper, we present an assessment of shoreline changes along the eastern coast of mainland China from ~1990 to 2019 by applying a novel method recently developed by us. This method which we call the Nearest Distance Method (NDM) is used to make a detailed assessment of shorelines delineated from Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) and Operational Land Imager (OLI) images. The results indicate a dramatic decline in natural shorelines that correspond to the rapid increase in the construction of artificial shorelines, driven by China’s economic growth. Of the entire coast of mainland China, the biggest change occurred along the Bohai Sea, where artificial shorelines expanded from 42.4% in ~1990 to 81.5% in 2019. Over this period, this study indicates that China lost > 60% of its biological shorelines, a trend that is especially worrisome because these include areas that were once biologically diverse and extremely rich. As anticipated, shoreline losses were greatest where regions of low economic value had been transformed to areas of higher economic value. Overall, this influence of human activities on shorelines in China is unprecedented. The repercussions of these changes on ecosystems, and the susceptibility of new shoreline developments to population growth and sea-level rise, need to be assessed urgently before additional changes are effected.
