Chickaloon Flats, Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, is an 11,000-ha tidal mudflat complex in upper Cook Inlet, Alaska. One-third (23 of 70) of Alaskan shorebird species use this protected coastal estuary stopover during migration. We conducted an isotopic approach to estimate probable breeding, staging and/or non-breeding origins of six shorebird species, some of high conservation concern, using Chickaloon during spring and fall migration of 2009 and 2010. We analyzed stable-hydrogen (d 2 H), carbon (d 13 C), and nitrogen (d 15 N) isotope ratios from feathers and performed a likelihood-based assignment to infer North and South American origins. Estimated molting distributions for Greater Yellowlegs (Tringa melanoleuca) occurred in southwest Alaska, and south-central Alaska for Short-billed Dowitcher (Limnodromus griseus caurinus). Lesser Yellowlegs (Tringa flavipes) likely molted in western Alaska and a latitudinal band across Canada and wintered throughout the contiguous United States. Least Sandpipers (Calidris minutilla) wintered from Oregon and south in North America but showed an isotopically similar possibility in Ecuador, Colombia, and Venezuela. Long-billed Dowitchers (Limnodromus scolopaceus) molted primaries across western United States and Canada. Pectoral Sandpipers (Calidris melanotos) likely molted near Rio de La Plata in southeastern South America. These results highlight the overall value of Chickaloon Flats as a stopover for long-distance shorebird migrants.

Population abundance and trend estimates are crucial to science, management, and conservation. Shorebirds, which are abundant in many coastal habitats and play important roles in coastal ecosystems, are facing some of the most dramatic population declines of any group of birds globally. However, accurate and up-to-date population estimates are lacking for most shorebird species. We thus conducted comprehensive, simultaneous, and community scientist-led surveys of the entire Atlantic Coast of southern South America — stretching from central Brazil to Tierra del Fuego — to gather counts of shorebirds that we combined with remote sensing analyses and two-step hurdle models that accounted for presence and abundance. Our objectives were to estimate shorebird densities by habitat, identify high-concentration areas, understand the environmental factors affecting their distributions, and provide population estimates for both Nearctic and Neotropical species. We counted a total of 37,207 shorebirds of 17 species and, from those counts, estimated that nearly 1.1 million shorebirds use the region's coastline. We also found that shorebirds occurred in the highest densities in shallow water wetland habitats and that fewer shorebirds occupied areas that were further away from estuaries. Although not directly comparable, our results suggest the population sizes of the Nearctic species whose nonbreeding ranges are predominantly in southern South America may have declined substantially since previous estimates. At the same time, our study represents the first empirically derived population estimates for Neotropical breeding shorebird species and indicates that they are far more abundant than previously thought. Taken together, our results highlight the power of community scientists to carry out structured protocols at continental scales and generate critical data for a group of at-risk species.

Patch use and departure rules by gull-billed tern Gelochelidon nilotica

The gull-billed tern Gelochelidon nilotica feeds on the fiddler crab Leptuca uruguayensis, which settles forming patches in south-eastern temperate mudflats of Argentina. Through field observations, we evaluated whether gull-billed terns used patches following the marginal value theorem (MVT). Gull-billed tern residence time in a patch was not related to crab density or travel times. The number of captures was also unrelated to crab density. Most of the times (44.6%) terns captured only one crab from each patch, and 35% of the times they left without a capture. However, crab density was lower when terns left the patches than when they arrived. This suggests that following several capture attempts by terns, crabs hide, producing a temporary decrease in their availability, forcing tern departure from the patches, which are no longer profitable. Thus, when prey availability is affected more by predator activity than by consumption, the MVT may not necessarily apply.
