“…This indicates that service-learning in business education offers similar benefits to community organizations within urban communities, regardless of the type of organization, industry sector or national context. Also, our study indicates specific benefits to community partners that are not identified within related literature on business education (Cyr & Kemp, 2018; Furlow, 2010; Nikolova & Andersen, 2017; Vizenor et al, 2017), and thus provide insights on the value of service-learning such as the theoretical knowledge gained and service-learning projects used as a basis to engage with external stakeholders, particularly, for-profit firms use of the project deliverables to evaluate proposals from other business consultants.…”

“…Few studies provide a general analysis without specifying the related service-learning course (Basinger & Bartholomew, 2006; Gazley et al, 2012; Sandy & Holland, 2006; Tryon & Stoecker, 2008; Vernon & Foster, 2002); and even with the inclusion of business-related service-learning courses, there is no specific link of the business courses to stated outcomes (see Cronley et al, 2015; Karasik, 2020). The few exceptions of Cyr and Kemp (2018), Furlow (2010), Nikolova and Andersen (2017) and Vizenor et al (2017) studies that explored the perspectives of community partners on business-related courses are limited in their selection of community partners and the number of service-learning courses analyzed. For instance, Nikolova and Andersen (2017) and Vizenor et al (2017) based their analyses on few business courses and community partners from small community organizations predominantly based in rural communities, thus presenting a narrow coverage of community partners and business-related courses.…”

“…Furthermore, a number of international service learning programmes (Niehm et al, 2015;Vasbinder & Koehler, 2015;Miller et al, 2017;Mitchell, 2018) and a South African service learning programme (Mokoena & Spencer, 2017) used SMEs as their community partners, which revealed another gap in research since few consider the influence of MC tools and resources, SME performance factors and SME satisfaction. Several SME and/or service learningrelated studies have investigated one or several of the MC tools and resources (Schachter & Schwartz, 2009;Furlow, 2010;Wiese & Sherman, 2011;Goertzen et al, 2016;Rosenberg et al, 2016;Hardin-Ramanan et al, 2018) and SME performance factors (Hopkins, 2012;Rajhans, 2009;Hove & Masocha, 2014;Rosenberg et al, 2016;Rambe, 2017;, but none have investigated the broad range that was included in this study, nor in terms of community partner/SME client satisfaction, so this an additional gap in research from both a local and international perspective.…”

“…12401) and funded by public and private grants, educational institutions design academic curricula that support service learning as a pedagogical method with which students learn to meet community needs and foster civic responsibility through active community service. By incorporating community service into the curriculum, service learning provides students with real-world learning experiences, benefits the community and society as a whole, and also helps faculty integrate teaching, learning, and public service (Andrews 2007;Easterling and Rudell 1997;Furlow 2010;McIntyre, Webb, and Hite 2005;Toncar et al 2006).…”

“…According to Andrews's (2007) 10-year review of the servicelearning literature through 2006, as well as marketing education service-learning research (Berry and Workman 2007;Furlow 2010;Metcalf 2010;Newman and Hernandez 2011;Wiese and Sherman 2011) and client-sponsored project research (Bove and Davies 2009;Huser and Munoz 2008;Parsons and Lepkowska-White 2009;Strauss 2011), no prior quantitative studies have been published that document how the effects of CBL formats and the traditional CS&SL design differ in the marketing curriculum.…”
