Re-Figuration von Räumen| Band 1 Editorial Der Reihe Re-Figuration von Räumen liegt die Prämisse zugrunde, dass das Soziale immer räumliche Formen annimmt. Die hier versammelten Studien befassen sich mit gegenwärtigen Transformationen sozial relevanter Räume und den damit verbundenen Konflikten, Krisen und Unsicherheiten. Sie untersuchen die These, dass es in diesen Transformationen und Konflikten ein gemeinsames Muster gibt, das als »Re-Figuration der Räume« bezeichnet wird. Die unterschiedlichen Wandlungsprozesse finden ihren Ausdruck in neu entstehenden Raumformen und -figuren, in den Kämpfen um die Aufrechterhaltung etablierter Raumstrukturen sowie den daraus resultierenden Figurationen. Oder mit anderen Worten: Der Raum ist ebenso wie die Zeit das Medium der Transformation der gegenwärtigen Gesellschaft, so dass die Analyse der Räume einen integrativen Ausgangspunkt für die Analyse der entstehenden Gesellschaftsmuster darstellt. Die Publikationen der Reihe entspringen dem Sonderforschungsbereich 1265 Re-Figuration von Räumen und damit aus sozialwissenschaftlichen Disziplinen wie Soziologie, Geographie, Architekturwissenschaft, Kommunikationswissenschaft, Stadtplanung und Europäischer Ethnologie. Sie nehmen mitunter eine theoretische Ausrichtung ein, beruhen zumeist aber auf empirischen Studien, die qualitative, quantitative oder visuelle Methoden verwenden. Die Reihe wird herausgegeben von Hubert Knoblauch und Martina Löw. Martina Löw ist Professorin für Planungs-und Architektursoziologie am Institut für Soziologie der Technischen Universität Berlin. Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen in den Bereichen Soziologische Theorie, Stadtsoziologie, Raumtheorie und Kultursoziologie. Sie ist Sprecherin des DFG-Sonderforschungsbereiches »Re-Figuration von Räumen« und wirkt als Beraterin in verschiedenen Stadtentwicklungsprojekten mit. Sie hatte Fellowships und Gastprofessuren u.a. in New York (USA), Göteborg (Schweden), Salvador de Bahia (Brasilien), St. Gallen (Schweiz), Paris (Frankreich) und Wien (Österreich) und ist als Mitglied des Steering Committee der Berlin University Alliance verantwortlich für das Forschungsförderprogramm »Social Cohesion«. Von 2011 bis 2013 war sie Vorsitzende der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Soziologie. Volkan Sayman ist Soziologe und arbeitet als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am DFG-Sonderforschungsbereich »Re-Figuration von Räumen« an der Technischen Universität Berlin. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind Wissenschafts-und Innovationsforschung, die Transformation öffentlicher Räume, Science and Technology Studies sowie qualitative Methoden der Sozialforschung.

The dichotomy between ‘strong’ and ‘weak’ ties is a common theme in sociological scholarship dealing with urban space, yet urban ethnographers have long been describing the prevalence of impersonal relations. Such relations can be described as fleeting encounters between complete strangers, while others – as in the case of ‘nodding’ relationships – are durable and have yet to be conceptualised. The notion of ‘invisible ties’ is proposed as a conceptual handle for studying typical urban relations that complement the established notions of strong and weak ties. Through an empirical study of four residential buildings in Geneva (Switzerland), these ‘invisible ties’ are revealed by means of a systemic approach to social urban life, from which two key actors emerge: ‘socialisers’ and ‘figures’. This research addresses gaps in the literature on interpersonal relations in urban contexts by focusing on the interplay between different types of social ties, encompassing the whole continuum from anonymity to intimacy.
