Computer technology influences the capability to enhance the functionality of manufacturing and product design technologies. Innovations in computational design and digital manufacturing empower designers and manufacturers to create novel representations and algorithms for designing, analyzing, and planning the production of highly complicated products achievable through state-of-the-art technology. Various principles, including computational physics, geometric reasoning, and automated spatial planning, enable engineers to generate entirely new categories of products in the footwear industry. This study aims to review the methods and tools that have been published in the literature for the last twenty years, and provide a better understanding of the parameters, tools, and controls that contribute to the design and manufacturing processes of shoes. The main focus is on highlighting the product design-related trends within the footwear industry. A structured framework becomes apparent in the literature through the grouping and presentation of information. This framework facilitates drawing conclusions about the trends and existing needs derived from in-depth research in the field of footwear. Additionally, it reveals the upcoming methods and tools that will contribute to the enhancement and development of this emerging and promising industry sector. In conclusion, the categorization limitation within the footwear industry could serve as the foundation for exploring key areas to be analyzed further in other industries, for instance, in furniture, clothing, and packaging.

Design methodology for mass personalisation enabled by digital manufacturing

Mass Personalisation (MP) is becoming more significant to answer diversifying customer needs, as a result of the advancements in digital manufacturing. In contrary to the modular design in mass customisation, Design for MP (DfMP) proposes more profound changes in product and active user involvement in the design process, while maintaining mass efficiency. Traditional product development methodologies fall short in guiding MP, as it has the distinct differences with product variability and the customer involvement with specific needs. In this study, a dedicated design methodology for MP is presented, focussing on these key dimensions. The proposed methodology guides the designer through the development process of a user modifiable design and demonstrates how to facilitate the user involvement in reaching a personalised design. It proposes a flexible and adaptable seed design architecture, and an interactive customer co-creation process. The development of a seed design, construction of its design space, and management of the solution space with a design solution algorithm are elaborated. The application of the methodology was illustrated on the personalisation of knitted footwear, and 3D printed saxophone mouthpiece. The examples show the potential of the methodology to deal with coupled MP cases. A systematic approach to DfMP will allow expanding MP to more products, and acts as a foundation for the customer co-creation oriented design in the context of this emerging paradigm.

Elastic shape memory polymeric materials for comfort fitting footwear

Nowadays consumers demand more and more comfort and functionality from their footwear, making these characteristics very important considerations in footwear design and evaluation. Both are the results between the nature of human body and different elements of the footwear. Although there are quite many different methods or ways to achieve better comfort fitting, for instance, via 3D printing, disadvantages are still quite obvious in available products in the market. Thus, in order to improve comfort fitting and provide a better solution to consumers, shape memory polymers are introduced. First, a commercially available polymer, namely ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) foam is investigated in terms of its shape memory effect (SME). It is concluded that this EVA foam can satisfy some but not all of the requirements for comfort fitting shoes. Since it is difficult to find an existing shape memory material that meets the requirements for comfort fitting footwear, both thermoset and thermoplastic shape memory hybrids (SMHs) programmable at around human body temperature with tailorable elasticity and stretchability are developed. The fitting time window for the thermoset version is over 10 minutes, while it is less than two minutes for the thermoplastic version. No similar materials have been reported so far. Additionally, some possible shoe designs are proposed and the enhanced stretchability via local structural design is investigated by finite element method (FEM). Subsequently, a few prototypes are fabricated and the feasibility to actualize comfort vi fitting shoes using developed materials is demonstrated. Although the shoe prototypes are only for the purpose of proof-of-concept, the demonstration successfully shows that the prototypes are deformable to fit different sized feet at around human body temperature. Such a kind of comfort fitting approach has yet been achieved using any other existing materials and technologies.
