Shock metamorphism of quartz in nature and experiment: II. Significance in geoscience*

Abstract: Abstract— The occurrence of shock metamorphosed quartz is the most common petrographic criterion for the identification of terrestrial impact structures and lithologies. Its utility is due to its almost ubiquitous occurrence in terrestrial rocks, its overall stability and the fact that a variety of shock metamorphic effects, occurring over a range of shock pressures, have been well documented. These shock effects have been generally duplicated in shock recovery experiments and, thus, serve as shock pressure ba… Show more

“…They consist of irregular fragments with millimeter and centimeter sizes, in a carbonate matrix. In the breccias collected on the southern edges of the Isli crater, we noted the presence of several shocked quartz grains in planar structures (FP) [10,11] associated sometimes with rolling extinction (Figure 4B), indicators of shock metamorphism. The most quartz grains have a single family of PFs, but some grains have two families of planar structures.…”

“…Detailed diagnostic criteria are described by various authors (e.g. Stöffl er and Langenhorst, 1994; Grieve et al 1996;French, 1998;McCall, 2009;French and Koeberl, 2010;Maziviero, 2012). Some of these features are considered as indicative, but not diagnostic, i.e.…”
