In terms of maritime freight transport utilization rate in Turkey it is very low. Samsun city has strategic importance and great potential for maritime transportation. In this study, firstly, the position of Samsun port in the ranking in terms of freight transport in our country and the Black Sea Region was investigated. It ranks first in the Black Sea Region in terms of import and export amounts and the number of ships arriving in Turkish ports, and 9th in the ports in our country. This port has 4% import and 1.5% export volume among other Turkish ports. It is the most important however highly polluted port in the Black Sea region and the ratio of cargo ships is high. For this reason, in the continuation of the study, the annual amount of emissions generated by cargo ships is examined with two different approaches and the annual emission values determined according to these methods are compared. Then, the reductions and differences between applications that reduce energy consumption and emissions are discussed. Preferring higher quality fuels and reducing the time spent at the port are among the methods that can be applied to reduce emissions from ships coming to Samsun ports. The emissions generated by the generators at the port and the exhaust emissions during the cruise should be reduced. It is inevitable for us to make improvements in our ships and ports to minimize air pollution by international regulations and developments. In the numerical examination, it was observed that air pollution caused by the ship could be reduced by taking such measures.

Due to the serious situation and deterioration tendency of the atmosphere environment, energy saving and emission reduction are concentrated and desired for each government and international organization. In this research, energy consumption and pollution emission during fabrication processing in shipyards and ocean engineering factories were holistically surveyed for the first time, while the ship industry is the key pillar of manufacturing for national economic development and dominant monitoring objects with severe environment pollution in China. With the visiting and investigation of six representative factories with construction and repair of ship and offshore structure, consumptions of electrical energy as well as chemical energy were summarized for each fabrication processing according with elementary manufacturing flow, which are mainly determined by working load, requirement of quality, and utilization efficiency of energy. Then, various pollutants generated during fabrication procedures were classified and surveyed, while their emission amounts were also summarized by considering their harm level to human health, atmosphere, and ecological environments. In addition, advanced and practical solutions for emission reduction of dust particles and VOCs (volatile organic compounds) were introduced and carried out while the application results were compared with requirements of corresponding laws and regulations.

Under the recent background of ‘Green Shipping’ and rising fuel prices, it is very important to reduce the fuel consumption rate of ships, which is directly affected by the performance of the main engine. A reasonable maintenance schedule can optimise the performance of the main engine. However, a traditional maintenance schedule is based on the navigation distance and time, ignoring many other factors, such as a harsh working environments and frequently changing operating conditions, which will lead to faster performance degradation. In this study, a real-time evaluation method combing big data of ship energy efficiency with physics-based analysis is proposed to judge the degradation of main engine performance and assist in determining the maintenance schedule. Firstly, based on the developed ship energy efficiency big data platform, the distribution statistics and comparison of different operating states are carried out. Gaussian mixture model (GMM) and Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (DBSCAN) are used to cluster the data and the high-density data areas are obtained as the analysis points. Then, the data of the analysis points are polynomial fitted, by the least square method, to obtain the propulsion characteristics curves, load characteristic curves, and speed characteristic curves, which can be used to observe the performance degradation of the main engine. The results show that this method can effectively monitor the degradation degree of the main engine performance, and is of great significance to fuel efficiency improvements and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction.
