Shifts in the Fecal Microbial Community of Cystoisospora suis Infected Piglets in Response to Toltrazuril

Abstract: Host-Toltrazuril-C. suis Interactions diversity on dol 11. In addition to cystoisosporosis prevention, toltrazuril seems to contribute to the stabilization of the gut microbial development during the suckling phase and thus may reduce the need for antibiotics to control infections with secondary bacterial enteropathogens in C. suis-infected suckling piglets.

“…Loss of gastrointestinal integrity and increased motility following C. muris infection may account for the greatly reduced abundance of some major anaerobic commensal bacteria such as Bacteroides S24-7. The would be consistent with results of Cystoisospora suis infection ( 31 ). Other bacterial genera such as Prevotella were also disturbed in our study.…”

“…Contrasting the latter, the presence of bacterial DNA in amniotic fluid [4] allows for assuming that gut microbial activity and compounds from microbial metabolism may play a role in fetal development in late gestation. Likewise, meconium contains relevant concentrations of SCFA (especially acetate and propionate), which supports that microbial action in a piglet's gut commences before Nutrients 2022, 14, 2524 2 of 15 birth [3,5,6]. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) may also reach the fetuses via the placenta, as small concentrations are present in maternal blood [7,8].…”

“…Merogony and gamogony take place entirely in one host and the sporogony in the environment. After ingestion of sporulated oocysts, invasive stages are released and infect the gut epithelial cells to reproduce asexually within an intracellular vacuole 6 . The final generation of merozoites is considered to be sexually committed as the first step towards sexual development.…”
