Shielded and unshielded geometries in the search for orphan sources

Abstract: A car-borne NaI(Tl) spectrometric system was used together with a 137 Cs source to obtain realistic data in the search of unshielded and semi-shielded orphan sources. The PSC (potassium stripped counts) method was used to estimate the influence by the shielding on the detection ability. A reduction of about 5% in the critical distance was obtained for the semi-shielded source. A curve fitting method was also developed and evaluated. The results showed inferior ability to find the source, compared to the PSC me… Show more

“…When it comes to methods for searching for orphan sources, numerous approaches have been developed. The foundational methodology was introduced by Long and Martin [7] and Hjerpe and Samuelsson [8], introducing the concept of mobile search. These systems rely on systematically sweeping a detector across the search area while monitoring the count rate of a counting window.…”

“…In the method above, the source was not shielded. A method devised by Hjerpe and Samuelsson in 2006 [32] used a semi-shielded Cs-137 source. A curve fitting technique was applied using the given regression model.…”
