Shellfish Aquaculture from Space: Potential of Sentinel2 to Monitor Tide-Driven Changes in Turbidity, Chlorophyll Concentration and Oyster Physiological Response at the Scale of an Oyster Farm

Abstract: The algorithms of Novoa et al. (2017) and Gons et al. (2005) were recalibrated and applied to Sentinel2 data to retrieve suspended particulate matter (SPM) and chlorophyll a (chl a) concentration in the environmentally and economically important intertidal zones. Sentinel2-derived chl a and SPM concentration distributions were analyzed at the scale of an oyster farm over a variety of tidal conditions. Sentinel2 imagery was then coupled with ecophysiological modeling to analyze the influence of tide-driven chl … Show more

“…Seventy‐six percent of the annual export of MPB biomass from the sediment to the water column occurs during flood in the model. In the Bay of Bourgneuf (NW France), Gernez et al () also retrieved higher benthic Chl a resuspension in flood than in ebb using the remote sensing algorithm used in our study.…”

“…Then, a near‐infrared/red band ratio was used to compute the phytoplankton absorption at 665 nm: aphyfalse(665false)=false(0.70+bbfalse)ρwfalse(705false)ρwfalse(665false)0.40bbp, where p is a constant set to 1.02 (Gernez et al, ). Finally, Chl a concentration (mg Chl a m −3 ) was obtained by dividing the phytoplankton absorption by the chlorophyll‐specific absorption coefficient at 665 nm ( aphy*): false[Chl0.1emnormalafalse]=aphyfalse(665false)aphy*false(665false) …”

“…Over water, the airborne R rs (λ) spectra consistently display the typical spectral features of Bourgneuf Bay turbid areas [33,34]. The spectral shape, intensity, and standard deviation of the R rs (λ) spectra are very variable from one class to another (Figure 6a-c).…”

“…SPM concentration is generally higher than 100 g·m −3 in the waters adjacent to the northern mudflats, and lower than 20 g·m −3 in the southern area [31][32][33]. Phytoplankton growth is limited by too high SPM concentration in the most turbid waters, but high concentration of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), over 10 mg·m −3 , has been documented in the vicinity of the tidal flats [31,34] and is due to the resuspension of benthic microalgae [35].…”
