Morphometric analysis of biogenic recording structures within marine organisms has applications in stock assessment, taxonomics, and ecomorphological studies, with shape variation markedly influenced by both genetics and the surrounding environment. Geometric morphometrics (GM) is an alternative approach to the “traditional” method of collecting linear measurements and applying multivariate statistical methods to these data. Landmark- and outline-based GM methods are suggested to have several advantages over the “traditional” method. Due to the increasing popularity of GM methods in the modern literature, this chapter first compares different morphometric techniques, and then reviews the methods applied to recording structures, with a focus on GM outline-based analyses. It is clear that outline methods have become a popular method of analysis for structures such as otoliths, particularly for the purpose of distinguishing between population components. However, for other structures such as beaks this technique is only in its early stages of application and is more difficult to apply but shows great promise for future studies. The advantages of using a holistic approach, incorporating several techniques including outline analysis for stock identification purposes is discussed.

“…Arctica islandica occurs at depths down to 482 m (Nicol, 1951), although it is commonly found between 10 and 280 m (Kennish and Lutz, 1995;Merrill and Ropes, 1969;Rowell and Chaisson, 1983;Thompson, Jones, and Ropes, 1980). There is considerable knowledge on anatomy (Boretto et al, 2014;Morton, 2011;Palmer, 1979), behaviour (Taylor, 1976), ecophysiology (Ballesta-Artero et al, 2017;Bayne, 1971;Tschischka, Abele, and Portner, 2000), and population dynamics (Brey et al, 1990;Murawski, Ropes, and Serchuk, 1982;Thompson, Jones, and Ropes, 1980), the latter being particularly interesting for the management of commercial fisheries of A. islandica. Owing to its extremely long life span and occurrence in the entire North Atlantic, the Arctic boreal Arctica islandica has become of particular significance for monitoring the environment, because information on past environmental conditions is archived in morphological and biogeochemical properties of the calcareous shell. To evaluate whether such properties are comparable between different localities, shell and soft body morphometry of six A. islandica populations, Norwegian Coast, Kattegat, Kiel Bay (Baltic), White Sea, German Bight (North Sea), and off NE Iceland, were compared. Discriminant analysis indicated distinct differences between populations, albeit not related to geographical distance, but more likely to local hydrography, bottom morphology, and food regime.

Amiantis purpurata shells from the San Matías Gulf (SMG) were analysed in order to compare both morphology and size throughout the late Quaternary in relation to environmental changes. Shells from modern beaches, Holocene marine assemblages (late Holocene, 3630 ± 100 years bp) and interglacial Pleistocene marine assemblages (MIS 5, 100 ka years bp) were studied by measuring the height and length, and using the elliptic Fourier analysis (EFA) to take an outline contour. The Pleistocene shells were smaller, more elliptical and with a deeper lunule than the Holocene and modern ones. No significant differences were recorded in the allometry index throughout the late Quaternary. The variation in size and shape of the A. purpurata shells could be related to the phenotypic plasticity of this species as a response to the environmental changes registered in the SMG during the Quaternary. These changes include variations in sea surface temperatures, salinities and substrates, and also water circulation changes, which would have modified nutrient availability. Morphological changes imply burrowing activity, mechanical stability, nutrient uptake and defence response to predation.
