Sheet Molding Compounds

Laurent Orgéas,
Pierre J. J. Dumont

Abstract: Sheet molding compounds (SMC) are fiber‐reinforced thermosetting semifinished products. They are produced in thin uncured and thickened sheets that can be handled easily before their forming process. To a larger extent, SMC is a generic term that designates such types of compounds together with the process to convert them into large composite parts, which mainly display shell‐like geometry. This process is usually compression molding. SMC are widely used in a large diversity of fields of applications (aerospac… Show more

“…Epoxies can also be thickened, but not using the same type of agents commonly used for polyesters [20]. Many high performance epoxies can be formulated as B-staged systems, where the reaction between the resin and the curing agent is incomplete after mixing.…”

“…[1][2][3] Sheet molding compounds (SMCs) have wide application fields in aerospace, agricultural, rail and marine, and building and construction, but SMCs fabrication has been motivated mostly by the automotive industry. 2,4 Moreover, among the advantages of SMCs, the ability to adjust their formulations is very interesting. [5][6][7] The composite matrix of SMCs is a combination of polyester, vinylester or epoxy as a thermosetting resin, fillers such as alumina, calcium carbonate, and thickeners, referred to as additives.…”

[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8] A variety of fiber reinforcement can be used including glass or carbon fibers with a volume fraction between 10% and 65%.…”

“…SMCs are thermosetting resin-based fiber-reinforced semi-finished materials. To a large extent, SMC is also a generic term describing this type of compound combined with the process to convert it into a composite part, which is usually based on compression molding [1]. In 2016, SMCs, in combination with bulk molding compounds (BMC), were the most produced glass fiber-reinforced composites [2], highlighting the importance of this material class for numerous technical applications.…”
