Sheep linkage mapping: nineteen linkage groups derived from the analysis of paternal half-sib families.

Abstract: Nineteen linkage groups containing a total of 52 markers have been identified in the sheep genome after typing large paternal half-sib families. The linkage groups range in size from 2 markers showing no recombination to a group containing 6 markers covering approximately 30 cM of the sheep genome. Thirteen of the groups have been assigned to a sheep chromosome. Three groups contain markers from bovine syntenic groups U2, U7 and U29, and one other group contains a marker that has been mapped only in humans. Th… Show more

“…Sheep genome was first developed starting with information about gene map and research for the identification of gene markers location on each chromosomes using in situ hybridization, Di Meo et al, (2007) and somatic cell hybrid panels, Burkin et al, (1997). Next step to follow in sheep genome was the linkage discovered behind genes maping starting in 1994 with 19 linkage groups with 52 markers and candidate genes RFLP, (Crawford et al 1994). Booroola fecundity gene was mapped by sheep genome scanning, (Montgomery et al, 1993).…”

“…KING et al (1991) and MALO et al (1993)l. One wonders to how many non-human mammals these methods of molecular genetics will be extended in the upcoming few decades; note that an initial genetic map of the sheep is reported in this issue of GENETICS (CRAWFORD et al, 1994). The major improvements in the creation of the genetic image of the mouse are joined by important technical improvements in the molecular description of the embryo by wholemount hybridization in situ (see WILKINSON 1992).…”
