Sheep Brucellosis in Kuwait: A Large-Scale Serosurvey, Identification of Brucella Species and Zoonotic Significance

Abstract: Brucellosis is a common zoonotic disease of major concern in humans of Kuwait, and B. melitensis causes most human cases. The disease is endemic in small ruminants, cattle, and camels for decades, causing substantial economic losses in livestock production. However, a nationwide large-scale investigation of brucellosis in the small ruminant population has not been done in the past two decades. A serosurvey of sheep brucellosis in the five districts of Kuwait with most animal production farms was done between 2… Show more

“…Isolation of the bacteria remains a gold standard but is hazardous for human health and requires advanced biosafety levels (i.e., level 3) and good training. Despite availability of newer and effective antimicrobials, the treatment of farm animals for brucellosis is generally forbidden as it poses significant public health risks [ 8 , 9 , 10 ].…”

“…Another survey from Oman reported a 0.4% seroprevalence in sheep and goats (Al‐Rawahi, 2015). However, a recent large‐scale study from Kuwait reported a higher seroprevalence of 7% in sheep in districts devoid of vaccination and 4.7% in herds with a vaccination history (Al‐Sherida et al., 2020). In general, brucellosis appears endemic in some, if not all GCC countries with varying prevalence.…”

“…Brucellosis is one of the world's most widespread bacterial zoonoses [1]. It affects domestic and wild animals and causes significant economic losses in livestock due to miscarriages, reproductive disorders, infertility, decline in milk production and serious public health problems [2,3]. Human can be infected by eating or drinking unpasteurized/raw dairy products causing a common zoonotic disease of great concern to people [1,4,5].…”
