Shedding of zoonotic pathogens and analysis of stomach contents in great cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis) from Switzerland between 2007 and 2012

Abstract: 208 healthy great cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis) shot during 5 consecutive hunting seasons from 2007/2008 until 2011/2012 were tested for Newcastle disease virus (APMV-1), avian influenza virus (AIV), Chlamydiae, and Salmonella spp. In addition, stomach contents were gross macroscopically examined. None of the birds was positive for APMV1, AIV or Chlamydiae. Twice Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhimurium and once a rough mutant of Salmonella Typhimurium were found. Stomach worms were … Show more

“…A study conducted by Schelling et al (1999) on the Swiss P. carbo population found AMPV-1 positive antibodies in nearly 20% of sampled cormorants but failed to isolate the virus. A more recent investigation in Switzerland failed to isolate AMPV-1 in tested individuals (Albini et al, 2014). The virus was, however, found in birds inhabiting the Volga estuary during the 2001, 2003 and 2006 virological monitoring programmes (Usachev et al, 2006;Iashkulov et al, 2008).…”

“…On the other hand, a recent study has found S. typhimurium, a leading cause of human gastroenteritis (McClelland et al, 2001), in a few cormorants shot in Switzerland (Albini et al, 2014). Further studies are required to fully elucidate the role of these birds in the dispersion of this pathogen.…”

“…Some studies also addressed the role of these birds in dispersion of bacterial pathogens such as Escherichia coli (Klimaszyk 2012; Klimaszyk and Rzymski 2013a, 2016), avian influenza virus (Albini et al 2014), avian paramyxovirus (Schelling et al 1999), and West Nile virus (Iashkulov et al 2008; Table 1). Recent studies also investigated the presence of gastric nematodes in these birds (Dziekońska-Rynko and Rokicki 2008; El-Dakhly et al 2012).…”
