Shedding Light: Understanding Energy Efficiency and Electricity Reliability

Abstract: The Policy Research Working Paper Series disseminates the findings of work in progress to encourage the exchange of ideas about development issues. An objective of the series is to get the findings out quickly, even if the presentations are less than fully polished. The papers carry the names of the authors and should be cited accordingly. The findings, interpretations, and conclusions expressed in this paper are entirely those of the authors. They do not necessarily represent the views of the International Ba… Show more

“…To be included in the review, studies need to measure at least one of the primary outcomes (energy consumption, energy affordability, CO 2 emissions and air quality indices and pollution levels). All 16 studies Three-quarters of the included studies (n = 12) examined only one measure of energy consumption, either electricity, gas, or total energy (Alberini et al, 2016(Alberini et al, , 2019Aydin et al, 2017, Beagon et al, 2018, Carranza & Meeks, 2016, Costolanski et al, 2013, James & Ambrose, 2017Liang et al, 2017;Maher, 2013;Scheer et al, 2013, Suter & Shammin, 2013, see Table 5. Two studies reported impacts on two consumption outcomes (Adan & Fuerst, 2016;Grimes et al, 2016,) and two reported impacts on all three consumption measures James & Ambrose, 2017).…”

“…Further empirical studies conducted by [29] on understanding the effective usage and efficiency of steady electricity in developing countries, with Kyrgyzstan as the main focus revealed that energy efficient light bulbs can indeed lead to significant reductions in energy efficiency. Also, [30] in a research conducted in Hong Kong on the optimization of low/zero energy buildings using both single and multiple optimization methods, observed that there was a higher performance obtained from buildings that adopted the renewable energy systems optimized by both methods than that of the benchmark building in most scenarios.…”

“…When the grid is asked to draw more power than available, it can result in damage to its major components; a problem that is prevalent in developing nations [78]. A poorly constructed transmission grid also results in high transmission losses, resulting in an average 18% power loss across sub-Saharan Africa.…”
