Shear wave anisotropy beneath the Aegean inferred from SKS splitting observations

Abstract: [1] SKS splitting parameters are measured in the Aegean region using events recorded at a dense temporary network in the south Aegean and the operating permanent networks, especially focusing in the back-arc and the near-trench areas of the Hellenic arc. In general, fast anisotropy directions are trench perpendicular in the back-arc area and trench parallel near the trench. Anisotropy measurements near the volcanic arc mark the transition between these two regions. In the back arc, a gradual increase is observ… Show more

“…Only seismic anisotropy (Fig. 10a, Paul et al, 2010;Hatzfeld et al, 2001;Evangelidis et al, 2011) possibly advocates for alongarc mantle flow that could be interpreted as originating from the Kefalonia window, but the not-so-clear nature of alongarc anisotropy (e.g. Russo and Silver, 1994;Long and Silver, 2009;Faccenna and Capitanio, 2013) prevents from being conclusive.…”

“…Subduction rates at the North and South Hellenic trenches occur at rates of 5 to 12 mm yr −1 and 25 to 40 mm yr −1 (e.g. McClusky et al, 1s (Paul et al, 2010) 1s (Evangelidis et al, 2011) 1s (Hatzfeld et al, 2001) − o n ti n e n ta l p la te o c e a n ic p la te 2000; Royden and Papanikolaou, 2011;Pérouse et al, 2012), respectively, which offsets the South and North Hellenic subduction zones by a few tenths of kilometres at present day. The formation of the fault itself results from the entry in the subduction zone of a very negatively buoyant oceanic plate to the south, while in the north the subduction of a continental unit of increasingly positive buoyancy proceeds, as the buoyancy difference of the two plate units suffices to trigger a laterally variable regime along the trench .…”

“…The recorded delay time between these two components is a function of the severity of the anisotopy and the thickness of the anisotropic layer. The shear wave anisotropy studies that I use here are representative down to a depth of around 200 km or more in eastern Turkey (34) and the eastern part of NAFZ (35) being possibly shallower farther west (36). P n waves, on the other hand, propagate typically below the Moho discontinuity along approximately horizontal rays apart from source and receiver legs.…”

“…Therefore, it is more meaningful to compare the P n anisotropy directions with geodetically measured strain rates rather than velocities [see (40) for a study in which P n anisotropy is used to measure the width of mantle deformation across a Continental Transform]. In my analysis, I use the SKS fast-splitting directions from (34)(35)(36)41) for the Aegean, central and eastern parts of the NAF, eastern Turkey, and Dead Sea Transform, respectively (see Fig. 2).…”

“…In the Southern Aegean, anisotropy is present as indicated by shear wave splitting (e.g. Hatzfeld et al 2001; Evangelidis et al 2011). If S ‐wave splitting occurs a further increase of the CF is observed when the second S wave arrives.…”
