Shear Testing of the Interfacial Friction Between an HDPE Geomembrane and Solid Waste

Abstract: High-density polyethylene (HDPE) geomembrane is often used as an anti-seepage material in domestic and industrial solid waste landfills. To study the interfacial shear strength between the HDPE anti-seepage geomembrane and various solid wastes, we performed direct shear tests on the contact interface between nine types of industrial solid waste or soil (desulfurization gypsum, fly ash, red mud, mercury slag, lead-zinc slag, manganese slag, silica fume, clay and sand) and a geomembrane with a smooth or rough su… Show more

“…Direct shear tests were performed under normal stresses of 12.25, 24.5, 49, 98, 196, 392 and 784 kPa. The experiments were performed at a shear rate of 0.5 mm/min because the permeabilities of CS, CG, RS, and RG were very high, and 0.1 mm/min because the permeability of SB was low [22,[32][33].…”

“…Several test results accomplished at the University of Manitoba (Geotechnical Laboratories) for ‘black’ and ‘white’ geotextile sandbags with friction coefficients of 0.40 to 0.49 were assumed [12]. In addition, several further investigations with other surface materials like polyethylene are available [13].…”

“…Including geogrids reduced the shear strength of gravel aggregates and the interface. Through direct shear tests, ZHOU et al [17], documented that the interfacial shear stress between HDPE geomembranes and industrial solid waste increased in correlation with the enhancement of shear displacement. The gradient of the stress-displacement curve showed a gradual decline.…”
