Casein, an organic milk protein, existed in masonry mortars from medieval times until the 18 th century. It was understood to improve workability of the mortar. Recent mortar conservation projects have proposed its use, however, little information is existent on its effects on strength, a critical property in repair of masonry mortars. Adding 0.25% casein by mass was insufficient to improve flow properties of mortar. It was found that adding 0.5% casein by mass resulted in a flowable mortar, however, a 75% reduction in strength resulted, while bond strength increased, after 56 days. Reducing the water by 18% resulted in a 50% reduction in strength from that observed in the control sample, while maintaining flowable properties. Reducing the water more than 27% yielded a rapidsetting, non-flowable mortar. The addition of casein is a plausible alternative for repointing existing mortar joints. It has favourable flow properties, as well as improved bond strength.iii

This paper addresses the problem of evaluation of strength of masonry walls. In-plane behaviour of masonry panels has been studied under monotonic diagonal-compression and shearcompression loading in quasi-static test facility. The results of 35 laboratory and in-situ tests are analysed to show that in the case of the diagonal compression test results are lower than the strength of masonry walls evaluated trough the shear-compression test, highlighting the problem of choosing the test which best simulates to the real behavior of the masonry when stressed by lateral loads. A presentation is also given of the results of a F.E. investigation for shear strength evaluation of masonry walls. F.E. modeling non-linear procedure was used for the representation of masonry panels. The numerical simulations are compared with experimental results and the reliability of the different finite element models is discussed, thus confirming the different shear strength values measured in the experimental campaign.

It has been shown in acoustic emission literature that the distance between a possible cracking event and a receiver is affecting the signal parameters providing a wrong image of the real fracture characteristics. In this study, lab-scale experimental tests on masonry components are performed in order to determine the disturbance of the acoustic emission wave properties and verify the experimental observations via numerical wave propagation analysis. The investigation is extended to different geometries including "couplets," "triplets" and masonry walls. The simulations allow to understand, verify and predict the acoustic emission signal properties alterations in many different types of masonry experiments as well as the correct characterization of the fracture mode.
