To study the impact of salt water intrusion on two types of soils from west coast region of India were investigated in the laboratory. The key characteristics evaluated included Atterberg limits, compaction characteristics, hydraulic conductivity and chemical characteristics of selected soils. The sea at this coast receives effluent from different points and hence the characteristics change with time and locality. Therefore, to maintain uniform composition, 0.5 N sodium chloride solution (NaCl) was prepared in the laboratory and batch tests were used to determine the immediate effect on soils. Soil specimens were prepared by mixing the soils with 0.5 N NaCl in the increments of 0, 5, 10 and 20% by weight to vary the degree of contamination. Experimental results of soils mixed with 0.5 N NaCl showed that the maximum dry density increases and the optimum moisture content (OMC) decreases with increasing sodium chloride concentration. The study also revealed that the hydraulic conductivity of the soils tested increases with increase in sodium chloride concentration. The Atterberg limits of contaminated specimens show a remarkable change when compared with uncontaminated specimens.

Leachate is a hazardous liquid that poses negative impacts if leaks out into environments such as soil and ground water systems. The impact of leachate on the downgraded quality in terms of chemical characteristic is more concern rather than the physical or mechanical aspect. The effect of leachate on mechanical behaviour of contaminated soil is not well established and should be investigated. This paper presents the preliminary results of the effects of leachate on the Atterberg limit, compaction and shear strength of leachate-contaminated soil. The contaminated soil samples were prepared by mixing the leachate at ratiosbetween 0% and 20% leachate contents with soil samples. Base soil used was residual soil originated from granitic rock and classified as sandy clay soil (CS). Its specific gravity ranged between 2.5 and 2.64 with clay minerals of kaolinite, muscovite and quartz. The field strength of the studied soil ranged between 156 and 207 kN/m 2 . The effects of leachate on the Atterberg limit clearly indicated by the decrease in liquid and plastic limit values with the increase in the leachate content. Compaction tests on leachate-contaminated soil caused the dropped in maximum dry density, dry and increased in optimum moisture content, w opt when the amount of leachate was increased between 0% and 20%. The results suggested that leachate contamination capable to modify some geotechnical properties of the studied residual soils.

Disposal of solid wastes has become a common problem for public administrations due to the high population growth rates and the unavailability of land in large cities. Besides, the increase of long-term rainfalls combined with poor runoff water collection systems in sanitary landfills causes greater production of leachate at the disposal sites. This paper examines the impact of solid wastes leachates on a tropical soil throughout the geotechnical characterization of two samples of residual soil, both sharing the same origin, one of them exposed to the effect of solid wastes leachates for over 15 years and the other one in natural soil conditions (uncontaminated). For this purpose, various laboratory tests were carried out to determinate the physical, chemical, structural, mechanical and mineralogical properties of soil samplings. The results suggest that the exposition of the contaminated sample to leachates modify significantly their physical, chemical, structural, hydro-mechanical and mineralogical properties, showing a degradation of the geotechnical behavior of soils exposed to contaminants. These should serve to raise awareness in environmental authorities about the inadequate disposal of solid wastes and other contaminants thrown directly into the soil.Keywords: Soil contamination; geotechnical characterization; environmental management. Efecto de los lixiviados de residuos sólidos en un suelo tropicalResumen Debido al alto índice de crecimiento demográfico y la poca disponibilidad de tierra que enfrentan las grandes ciudades, la disposición de residuos sólidos se ha convertido en una problemática constante para las administraciones; adicionalmente, se suma el aumento de las lluvias por largos periodos lo que combinado con prácticas deficientes en la captación de aguas de escorrentía en los rellenos sanitarios, ocasiona una mayor producción de lixiviados en los sitios de disposición. Para estudiar el efecto que pueden generar los lixiviados de residuos sólidos en los suelos tropicales, se caracterizaron geotécnicamente dos muestras de suelo residual del mismo origen, una expuesta al efecto de lixiviados de residuos sólidos por más de 15 años y otra en condiciones naturales (no contaminada), con el objeto de estimar el efecto que genera la presencia del contaminante en las propiedades geotécnicas de dicho suelo residual. La investigación se realizó mediante una campaña de ensayos de laboratorio para caracterizar las propiedades físicas, químicas, estructurales, mecánicas y mineralógicas de los suelos. Los resultados permitieron establecer que la exposición de la muestra contaminada a los lixiviados genera cambios significativos en sus propiedades físicas, químicas, estructurales, hidro-mecánicas y mineralógicas.
