Shear sensing based on a microstrip patch antenna

Abstract: A microstrip patch antenna sensor was studied for shear sensing with a targeted application of measuring plantar shear distribution on a diabetic foot. The antenna shear sensor consists of three components, namely an antenna patch, a soft foam substrate and a slotted ground plane. The resonant frequency of the antenna sensor is sensitive to the overlapping length between the slot in the ground plane and the antenna patch. A shear force applied along the direction of the slot deforms the foam substrate and caus… Show more

“…The dimensions of the radiation patch and the ground plane as well IV. ANTENNA SENSOR FABRICATION The procedure to fabricate the antenna sensor on a dielectric substrate with copper clads on both sides is similar to the printed circuit board (PCB) fabrication technique described by [28]. First, the geometry of the radiation patch and the transmission line was drawn in computer-aided design software and laser printed on a sheet of PCB image transfer film (Techniks Inc., PNPB20).…”

“…In addition to the more prevalent sensing techniques described above, wireless sensing methods have also been reported for the measurement of plantar load distributions. In 2012, Mohammad and Huang [106] proposed an antennabased sensing method to measure plantar pressure. As shown in Figure 10(a), the sensor consisted of a reflector and a loop antenna, separated by a dielectric substrate.…”

“…Similar to the antenna strain sensors, these antenna crack sensors operate on the principle that a crack changes the electric dimensions of the antenna and thus can be detected from the resulting frequency shift. Mohammad and Huang (2012b) also demonstrated an antenna shear sensor based on the same principle.…”
