Engineered biomaterials play a crucial role in the construction industry. The study and development of engineered biomaterials with high-strength are necessary to fulfill the construction requirements for medium and high-rise buildings and long-span bridges. Further promoting the localization of high-strength engineered biomaterials is crucial in terms of reducing CO2 emissions, effectively utilizing land resources, and taking into account the unique structure of forest resources in China. The goal of this modification is to satisfy the rising demand for eco-friendly living spaces.

To promote the development of the ‘Bamboo as a Substitute for Steel’ proposal, rotary cut bamboo veneers were applied to prepare a kind of high-strength laminated bamboo composite, which was achieved through the hot press molding method in this study. Orthogonal experiments of L9 (33) were performed, with hot-pressing temperature, pressure, and time considered as three influencing factors. Physical properties like density and moisture content, and mechanical properties like modulus of rupture (MOR), modulus of elasticity (MOE), shear strength, and compressive strength were tested for the samples. It can be obtained from the results of range analysis and ANOVA that higher density and lower moisture content were correlated with higher mechanical strength. Within the selected range of tested factors, a hot-pressing temperature and time of 150 °C and 10 min can contribute to higher density and lower moisture content, and the combination of 150 °C and 50 MPa can produce greater mechanical strength. In the thickness direction, the laminated bamboo composites displayed a notable compressed structure.

Bamboo is a natural biodegradable material used as a strength-bearing material that operates for system works, formwork supporting stands, structural members in low-rise houses, props, framing, bridges, laminated flooring, facades, walls, roofs, and trusses. Over recent years, there has been an increased demand for bamboo, considering sustainable construction practices. Exploring bamboo’s physical and mechanical behaviour is essential to develop innovative construction methods and design guidelines. Therefore, this paper aims to review the studies on bamboo culms’ material properties and physical behaviour, considering the load-bearing capacity and structural adequacy. This study summarises the physical and mechanical properties of a wide array of bamboo species grown worldwide. Mechanical properties such as compressive, tensile, flexural, shear, and bucking strengths are explored, highlighting the key findings in previous experimental works. Results have indicated a significant variability in bamboo’s material and mechanical properties considering the growth conditions, location along a culm, geometric imperfections and environmental conditions. In addition to material and mechanical properties, structural bamboo connections, engineered bamboo products, and preservative treatment of bamboo are also investigated. The construction industry can utilise the summary of the findings of this study to develop design guidelines for sustainable bamboo construction. Overall, this paper presents an overview of structural capability and drawbacks for future research and development using bamboo in modern construction.
