Shear modulus and damping ratios of transparent soil manufactured by fused quartz

Abstract: The mixture of fused quartz and pore fluid with the same refractive index has been used as a synthetic transparent soil to mimic the behavior of natural soil. Previous research has focused on its static properties. In this paper, the dynamic properties of fused quartz (dry samples and oil saturated samples), including shear modulus and damping ratio, were examined through a series of resonant column tests and dynamic torsional shear tests. It was found that fused quartz has similar dynamic behavior to that of … Show more

“…Through consulting the relevant literatures (Kong et al, 2016;Li and Lin, 2015;Iskander, 2010;Iskander et al, 2002a;2002b;Ezzein and Bathurst, 2011;Sui et al, 2011;Zhang et al, 2014), the currently common used aggregate are: Amorphous silica powder and silica gel, the pore fluid: Mineral oil and calcium bromide solution. The different combinations of aggregate and pore fluid are following four types: (i) Amorphous silica powder and Mineral oil; (ii) Silica gel and Mineral oil; (iii) Amorphous silica powder and Calcium bromide solution; (iv) Silica gel and Calcium bromide solution.…”

“…With years' development and exploration, the researches on visual model test have made a great progress from the perspective of simulating the spatial-temporal evolution law of deformation and crack of deep rock-mass [24], unstable mechanism of surrounding rock caused by excavation unloading [25], the inter-reaction between rock-soil mass and structures [26].…”

“…Recently, many researches were carried out on dynamic shear properties of soils or soils mixed with other solid waste [16][17][18][19][20][21][22]. e shear modulus and damping ratio of a backfill material are two essential indexes for the seismic performance analysis and safety performance evaluation of backfill materials [23][24][25][26][27][28][29]. Dynamic properties of steel slag improved with sand-tire shreds admixture had been studied [30].…”
