Shear loading detection of through bolts in bridge structures using a percussion‐based one‐dimensional memory‐augmented convolutional neural network

Abstract: The through bolt, which can be used as a shear connector, has attracted more attention since several accelerated bridge construction methods have been applied to renovate damaged bridges and construct new ones. Because current methods for shear loading detection of through bolts require constant deployment of sensors, the percussion‐based method may be a better alternative to improve the practicality and reduce costs. However, to process percussion‐induced sound signals, current percussion‐based methods all em… Show more

“…In the context of novelty detection, novel neural network architectures, such as CNN and RNN, were practised in the literature. For instance, CNNs were operated on both 1D signals (F. Wang et al., 2021), and 2D images (Guo et al., 2021; N. Wang et al., 2020). 2D CNN can also receive sensors’ data in the format of a 2D grid (Sajedi & Liang, 2020, 2021), preserving the spatial distribution of sensors.…”

“…The GCN was first proposed by LeCun et al. (1998) as inspired by the motivation of the CNN (Guo et al., 2020, 2021; Jeong et al., 2020; Tang et al., 2021; F. Wang et al., 2021). Graph neural network is a special neural network that can directly operate on graphic structural data.…”

“…It is vital to mention that multiple AI techniques have been incorporated to explain the solutions based on civil engineering problems amongst various machine learning (ML) algorithms [ 11 , 12 , 13 ]. Moreover, complex engineering problems can be simplified by utilizing the pattern recognition abilities of common AI algorithms [ 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 ]. Therefore, typical features of conventional AI techniques, i.e., Neural Network (NN), have been extensively employed by researchers to model various mechanical properties of concrete.…”
