Shear deformation analysis for woven fabrics

Abstract: A new mechanical model is proposed in this paper to evaluate the shearing properties for woven fabrics during the initial slip region. Compared to the existing mechanical model for fabric shear, this model involves not only bending but also torsion of curved yarns. This model has the advantage of taking into consideration the yarn undulation in fabrics while keeping mathematical rigor. Moreover, an erroneous formula in the previous research work from a referenced paper is modified. Analytical results show that… Show more

“…The draping of woven fabrics is often used in the manufacture of doubly curved composites of composite materials [2]. Also, a thorough understanding of the shearing behavior is very important for designing automated processes to handle fabrics [3]. Shear behavior has significant importance during processes because it influences drapeability, pliability of fabric.…”

“…Experiments by Sinoimeri and Drean (1996 ) showed the use of energy methods to study the fabric shear properties. Sun and Pan (2005 ) have proposed a mechanical model to evaluate the shearing properties for woven fabrics during the initial slip region. This model involved bending and torsion of curved yarns and exhibits a good agreement with experimental results for both the initial shear modulus and slipping angle.…”

“…In recent years, research has been performed to analyze various mechanical properties. [1][2][3][4][5] is still inadequate to establish various design criteria for load-bearing structures, especially as to the fatigue behavior.…”
