Shear bond strength of one‐step self‐etch adhesives to enamel: effect of acid pretreatment

Abstract: Enamel pretreatment with phosphoric acid significantly increased bond strength values of all the adhesives tested. No significant differences in bond strength were detected among the four different one-step self-etch adhesives with different pH. Two-step self-etch adhesive showed the highest bond strength.

“…Enamel was examined at ×10 magnification with the use of a microscope (Stereomicroscope SR, Zeiss, Oberkochen, Germany) in order to determine the amount of adhesive remaining on the enamel of each tooth after the detachment of the splints [27]. This parameter was determined according to the ARI scale ranging from 0 to 3 (0: no adhesive; 1: less than 50%; 2: more than 50%; and 3: 100% adhesive) in order to define the bond failure site [28,29].…”

“…The pH values of the adhesives tested showed a relation with the protective effect presented by the adhesives. G-aenial bond had a more pronounced protective effect and has the lowest pH (1.5) of all the products tested, 35 while the Futurabond U, with a pH = 2.3, presented an intermediate result and the Single Bond Universal, less effective, has pH = 3.0.…”

“…This finding agrees with the findings of many previous studies showing that applying acid etch in conjunction with SE adhesive systems, mainly in the enamel, is important. 30,31,[43][44][45][46] The bond strength relies mainly on the adhesive's capability to demineralize the smear layer and the underlying tooth structure. 47 Both the TNB-TE and SB-TE adhesives showed high bond strength values to unbleached and bleached enamel, likely owing to properly etched enamel surfaces and to the many micro-retentions that are achieved with phosphoric acid etching.…”
