Sharing and neoliberal discourse: The economic function of sharing in the digital on-demand economy

Abstract: In this paper I offer a critical analysis of "sharing" as a discursive formation in the emerging on-demand economy or, as its more commonly known, "sharing" economy. The set of firms and digital platforms that constitute the on-demand economy evade precise definition, though in popular commentary include Uber, Lyft, Airbnb, Taskrabbit, Couchsurfing, and Yelp, among others. I argue that sharing is a discursive formation that is produced through neoliberal economic practices and contributes to their constitution… Show more

“…Through online platforms, the SE can create a network for the supply and demand side, and connect the providers and customers to each other. Even so, Cockayne (2016) expresses SE as "a term that describes digital platforms that connect consumers to a service or commodity through the use of a mobile application or website" [108] (p. 73), and Laurell and Sandström (2017) recognize the SE as being ICT-enabled platforms, which are used for exchanges [35]. Monte (2015) states that these platforms are secure and transparent for the transactions regarding assets [52].…”

“…Originally, the SE has been popularized as a more sustainable form of consumption [56][57][58]. However, with the development and proliferation of the SE models and platforms, the debate around their impacts on sustainability has been growing and critical voices have become more sound [13,47,50,59,60]. Moreover, because of the newness of the SE concept, descriptive and explanatory studies dominated literature and report reviews [1, 12,37,[61][62][63] or the internet and social media monitoring [13], supplemented by research projects based on the primary sources analysis and case studies of selected industries or platforms [33,56,64,65].…”

“…A közösségi gazdaságra legtöbbször mint ernyőfogalomra tekintenek (Acquier, Daudigeos, Pinkse 2017;Hamari, Sjöklint, Ukkonen 2016;Kalóz 2015). Mindemellett számos elnevezést, rokon fogalmat társítanak a jelenséghez (Acquier, Daudigeos, Pinkse 2017;Martin 2016;Richardson 2015;Selloni 2017): gig-gazdaság (Friedman 2014), on-demand gazdaság (Cockayne 2016), közösségi fogyasztás (Botsman, Rogers 2011;Hamari, Sjöklint, Ukkonen 2016;Schor, Fitzmaurice 2015), platformgazdaság (Evans, Gawer 2016;Kenney, Zysman 2015, együttműködő gazdaság (Owyang, Tran, Silva 2013), the mesh (Gansky 2010(Gansky , 2011, hozzáférésalapú gazdaság (Bardhi, Eckhardt 2012), összekapcsolt fogyasztás (Dubois, Schor, Carfagna 2014;Schor 2014;Schor, Fitzmaurice 2015), tömegalapú kapitalizmus (Sundararajan 2016) -és ezeket sokszor egymás szinonimájaként használják. A sharing economy fogalmának ellentmondásosságát az adja, hogy túl sok tényezőt (például a platformok piaci orientációja, a megosztás és az árucsere gyakorlatának aránya, a felhasználók közötti interakciók típusa) -mely elemeket az egyes szerzők eltérő módon interpretálnak -kell figyelembe venni a fogalom meghatározása során (Codagnone, Martens 2016;Frenken et al 2015;.…”
