Abstract:Late Silurian to early Devonian lycophytes had prostrate aerial axes, while subordinate organs or subterranean axes were formed around the dichotomies of the axes. The subterranean axes are hypothesized to have evolved into root-bearing axes (rhizophores) and roots in extant Selaginellaceae and Lycopodiaceae, respectively. Consistent with this hypothesis, rhizophores are formed on the dichotomies of shoots in Selaginellaceae. However, it has remained unclear whether roots are borne in the same position in Lyco… Show more
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
