Industrial symbiosis (IS) employs a cross‐organizational perspective to seek synergistic pairings of one company's waste output to another company's input, enabled by interfirm cooperation through resource and information sharing. Orchestrating IS relationships among companies, however, remains a complex process. In the literature, a wide range of qualitative and quantitative tools have emerged, tackling issues ranging from identifying IS creation opportunities to performance evaluation. Thus far, the available literature has focused on separate aspects and perspective of IS creation. Each individual work contributes, in part, to the overall process of IS creation. The disparate perspectives provided by the literature reflect the fragmented nature of available tools supporting IS, which operate in isolation of each other. An encompassing view of tools supporting the process of IS creation is missing to date. Therefore, to fill this gap, this study aims to develop a more comprehensive description of the landscape of IS tools by analyzing the associated approaches, roles, and contribution of existing tools. Through this understanding, the insights gained can be used to aid future development and advancement of tools for IS practitioners.

Work and heat are the two predominant forms of energy in the process industry. Considerable savings can be achieved by synergizing the work and heat requirements of process streams. A generalized framework for integrating heat and work simultaneously is proposed based on a mixed‐integer nonlinear programing model for work‐heat exchange network synthesis. Starting with a set of streams with known flows, temperatures, and pressures, a network of single‐shaft‐turbine‐compressors with motors/generators, valves, heat exchangers, and utility heaters/coolers is synthesized for minimized total annualized cost. In contrast to existing works, (1) streams are not preclassified as hot/cold or high/low pressure, (2) pressure changes are allowed for streams with no net pressure change, (3) liquid‐vapor phase changes are allowed, and (4) phase‐based property correlations are used. Successful application of our approach to C3 splitting yields a nonintuitive configuration. Another application of an offshore natural gas liquefaction process is also studied. © 2018 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 64: 2472–2485, 2018

This is an author's version published in: http://oatao.univ-toulouse.fr/21118 ABSTRACT A multi-leader-follower game (MLFG) mode! for the design of the utility network in an eco-industrial park (EIP) is studied and implemented by introducing the concept of an environmental authority. The method ology also considers the flowsheet simulation of each enterprise involved in the EIP in order to obtain utility consumption of each enterprise operating by itself. The approach is validated on a case study of a potential Norwegian EIP. In the latter, multi-leader-single-follower and single-leader-multi-follower game models are studied. Each enterprise's objective is to minimize the total annualized cost, while the EIP authority objective is to minimize the equivalent C0 2 consumption related to utility consumption within the ecopark. The MLFG is transformed into a MOPEC and solved using GAMS® as an NLP. The method ology proposed is proven to be reliable in multi-criteria scenarios compared to traditional multiobjective optimization approaches, providing numerical Nash/Stackelberg equilibrium solutions and specifically in EIP planning and optimization. · - MoleculeUnit operation EIP Resource network
