Some undamped vibrations may cause undesirable behavior such as noise, overloads, excessive displacements, and early fatigue failures in the mechanical systems. Active vibration control is crucial for some of the mechanical systems such as washing machines. This article proposes a new vibration control strategy (VCS) for reduction of vibrations in washing machine. VCS utilizes adaptive nonlinear terminal sliding mode control (NTSMC) of double coil shear mode magnetorheological (MR) dampers and DC-DC buck converter. To achieve this goal, a control mechanism was designed that consists of two loops.The first loop implemented a force feedback control using proportional integral (PI) control and load cells. The second loop consists of adaptive NTSMC that was applied on buck converter to control current flow in MR dampers.The control law and finite convergence time to the equilibrium point were guaranteed for the current error using NTSMC. Moreover, an adaptive law was incorporated in NTSMC for the dynamic current control of MR dampers. The stability analysis of adaptive NTSMC was carried out using Lyapunov stability theory. An experimental setup was established for VCS that helps to study the performance of washing machine. A comparative analysis is presented for VCS with the passive dampers and other vibration control techniques that are reported in literature for washing machines.

The objective of this article is to determine the optimal flow mode in an MR damper to maximize its performance. Flow mode is one of the main design issues in an MR damper, as it determines the velocity profile and the pressure drop across the gap. In this research, two MR dampers were designed and manufactured with two flow modes: valve and mixed. The response of these two dampers was compared experimentally. Additionally, the experimental tests were correlated by theoretical results that were obtained considering the rheological behaviour of the MR fluid, the shear stress distribution in the gap, and the damper movement. Interestingly, the obtained results suggest that flow mode is not a significant parameter for determining the behaviour of a MR damper.

To enhance working-performance robustness of suspension, a vehicle suspension with permanent-magnet magnetic-valve magnetorheological damper (PMMVMD) was studied. Firstly, mechanical structure of traditional magnetorheological damper (MD) used in vehicle suspensions was redesigned through introducing a permanent magnet and a magnetic valve. Based on theories of electromagnetics and Bingham model, prediction model of damping force was built. On this basis, two-degree-of-freedom vehicle suspension model was established. In addition, fruit fly optimization algorithm- (FOA-) line quadratic Gaussian (LQG) control algorithm suitable for PMMVMD suspensions was designed on the basis of developing normal FOA. Finally, comparison simulation experiments and bench tests were conducted by taking white noise and a sine wave as the road surface input and the results indicated that working performance of PMMVMD suspension based on FOA-LQG control algorithm was good.
