Daylighting provision is an efficient approach in achieving a healing environment. Several researches praised the effect of daylight on stress reduction, shorter hospital length of stay, and the increasing of patients' satisfaction. The building façade has the primary role in controlling the indoor environment. In addition to daylighting, Double-Skin Façade (DSF) is an approach that can create a balance between patients' needs without sacrificing energy reduction and thermal comfort in the hot arid desert climate. This paper aimed at investigating the effect of fixed horizontal louvers integration in a multi-story double-skin façade to enhance daylighting performance and visual comfort in south-oriented patient rooms located in Cairo, Egypt. Rhinoceros software was used for modeling the proposed designs coupled with Diva-4-Rhino for daylighting simulations. The effect of changing louver's depth and slats' number resulted in 16 designs that were modeled for examination. Daylighting performance was analyzed by two metrics; Spatial Daylight Autonomy (sDA) and Annual Sunlight Exposure (ASE) on both the room surface floor and bed surface planes to represent daylight distribution and visual discomfort, respectively. Results showed that all cases were successful, achieving 100% sDA value on the bed plane area. However, the sDA and ASE values at the room floor area were different. Three louvered double-skin façade designs have succeeded in meeting sDA and ASE acceptance criteria and were recommended for integrating in patient rooms. Also, it was noticed that the unshaded double-skin façade presented the worst performance.

Windows and shading devices play a significant role in designing building facades to control the rate of the received daylight and improve visual comfort. This study is aimed to provide an optimization basis for building’s façade considering two variables of Annual Sun Exposure (ASE (1000/250h)) and the view to outside of an office. In this research, the effect of various parameters of shading louvers to the south was investigated in Tehran, Iran. The parameters were number, depth, angle as well as thickness. In this review, Rhino/Grasshopper plug was employed for simulations; moreover, Galapagos evolutionary solver component was used to run the optimization process. This study’s findings showed that it was possible to reach a view of nearly 90% of the interior spaces while the value of ASE (1000/250h) still remained in the reasonable range.

High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging using a fisheye lens has provided new opportunities to evaluate the luminous environment in visual comfort research. For glare analysis, strict calibration is necessary to extract accurate luminous maps to achieve reliable glare results. Most studies have focused on correcting the vignetting effect in HDR imaging during post-calibration. However, the lens projection also contributes to luminous map errors because of its inherent distortion. To date, there is no simple method to correct this distortion phenomenon for glare analysis. This paper presents a parametric-based methodology to correct the projection distortion from fisheye lenses for the specific use in glare analysis. HDR images were captured to examine two devices: a 190 • equisolid SIGMA 8 mm F3.5 EX DG fisheye lens mounted on a Canon 5D camera, and a 195 • fisheye commercial lens with an unknown projection, mounted on the rear camera of a Samsung Galaxy S7. A mathematical and geometrical model was developed to remap each pixel to correct the projection distortion using Grasshopper and MATLAB. The parametric-based method was validated using Radiance and MATLAB through checking the accuracy of pixel remapping and measuring color distortion with Structural Similarity Index (SSIM). Glare scores were used to compare the results between both devices, which validates the use of mobile phones in photometric research. The results showed that this method can be used to correct HDR images projection distortion for more accurate evaluation of the luminous environment in glare research.
