Sustainable software development, deployment, and usage will minimize the burden on the economy, environment, and technology along with having positive effects on human beings, and society. Green and Sustainable Software Engineering processes, principles, and practices provide the basis for sustainable software development. However, the continually increasing customer choices and requirements, environmental concerns, and competition among software development industries demand for the availability of reliable and complete sustainable software development approaches to develop lifelong sustainable software. This paper presents a sustainable software engineering framework, named as LAGSSE, by integrating the Agile, Lean and Green approaches. The framework is based on the “OntoSuSD” ontology to represent the diverse Agile, Lean and Green approaches for achieving the software sustainability dimensions, goals, and enablers. The proposed framework is validated using the Delphi method using the expert opinion scenario which has proved LAGSSE as an efficient framework for supporting sustainable software development. The LAGSSE framework is aimed to facilitate the software developers, academia, experts, and policy makers in the software industry, institutions, and government to make policies and develop sustainable software products according to their software sustainability goals and requirements.

Digitalization is forging its path in the architecture, construction, engineering, operation (AECO) industry. This trend demands not only solutions for data governance but also sophisticated cyber-physical systems with a high variety of stakeholder background and very complex requirements. Existing approaches to general requirements engineering ignore the context of the AECO industry. This makes it harder for the software engineers usually lacking the knowledge of the industry context to elicit, analyze and structure the requirements and to effectively communicate with AECO professionals. To live up to that task, we present an approach and a tool for collecting AECOspecific software requirements with the aim to foster reuse and leverage domain knowledge. We introduce a common scenario space, propose a novel choice of an ubiquitous language wellsuited for this particular industry and develop a systematic way to refine the scenario ontologies based on the exploration of the scenario space. The viability of our approach is demonstrated on an ontology of 20 practical scenarios from a large project aiming to develop a digital twin of a construction site.

New possibilities and challenges have evolved in the setting of the software engineering sector’s rapid transition to Industry 5.0, wherein sustainability takes centre stage. Appropriate evaluation approaches are required for analysing the long-term viability of software engineering practices within this paradigm. This study proposes an innovative approach to evaluating sustainability in software engineering within Industry 5.0 by utilising the fuzzy technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (fuzzy TOPSIS) methodology. The fuzzy TOPSIS approach is effective at accounting for the inherent uncertainties as well as imprecisions related to sustainability assessments, allowing for informed decision-making. This approach helps in the recognition of the most sustainable software engineering practices in Industry 5.0 by taking into account a defined set of sustainability parameters. We rigorously analyse the current literature and expert views to provide an extensive set of relevant sustainability standards for the area of software engineering. Following that, we develop an evaluation methodology based on fuzzy TOPSIS that can handle the subjectivity as well as fuzziness inherent in sustainability evaluations. A case study with a software development company functioning in Industry 5.0 demonstrates the utility and efficacy of our suggested framework. The case study outcomes reveal the benefits and drawbacks of various software engineering methodologies in terms of sustainability. The study’s findings provide substantial information for decision-makers in the software engineering field, assisting them in making educated decisions about sustainable. Finally, this study helps to establish environmentally and socially appropriate techniques within the context of Industry 5.0.
