Shape-Controlled Platinum Nanocubes and Their Assembly into Two-Dimensional and Three-Dimensional Superlattices

Abstract: Liquid-liquid phase transfer has been used to synthesize platinum nanocrystals with a cubic morphology. By finely tuning the parameters controlling the nucleation and growth processes, nanometric truncated cubes or perfect cubes may be obtained. To our knowledge, this is the first time such shapes are obtained with this procedure. The importance of both the length of the capping agent to control the growth process and the bromide anions as poison for the (111) facet is shown. The low degree of size polydispers… Show more

“…This observation is distinctive from the PtNi nanocrystals shown in Fig. 1A, indicating that the reduction might be conducted under kinetic control because the decahedral and icosahedral nanocrystals are supposed to be the most stable shapes for a fcc crystal under thermodynamic conditions [48][49][50]. As the reaction is continued (60 min), more and longer branches are observed to protrude from the corners of the nanocrystal seeds, and most of the nanocrystals have been completely transformed into urchin-like shapes (Fig.…”

“…The structural parameters play a crucial role in determining and optimizing the sensor-related properties (Calfen and Mann 2003;Tretyakov 2003;Rawle 2007;Perry and Carter 2006;Evans et al 2010;Colfen and Antonietti 2005;Demortière et al 2008;Shevchenko et al 2006;Koziej et al 2014;Ansari et al 2014). In order to achieve desired shape and size with enhanced functional properties, bottom-to-top wet chemical approach was undertaken to synthesize functional nanopowder for their chemical and biological studies.…”

“…By our best knowledge, no report has appeared yet for the preparation of the smaller Pt cube than 3 nm with high shape selectivity. The plausible reason is as follows: the size of Pt nuclei with cuboctahedron shape already has reached 2-3 nm, and the growth of specific facets is difficult without size increase [14,22]. Thus, preparation of small Pt nuclei is essential to obtain small Pt cube, in conjunction with controlled growth of (111) facet of Pt nuclei.…”
