“…Indeed, it may be that general negative feedback is only related to eating disorder symptoms among vulnerable individuals, as several studies have found (Oliver et al, 2001;Stroud et al, 2000;Tanofsky-Kraff et al, 2000;Tuschen-Caffier & Vögele, 1999). In particular, general negative social evaluation may trigger eating disorder symptoms among those for whom beliefs regarding the self and body shape/weight are strongly linked (Fairburn et al, 2003;Geller, Johnston, & Madsen, 1997;Vitousek & Hollon, 1990). “…Consistent with hypotheses, women endorsed greater shape-and weight-based self-esteem than men and men endorsed greater muscularity-based self-esteem than women. Yet, both shape and weight-based self-esteem related to lower global Research with female university students, women "at-risk" of developing an eating disorder, and clinical samples of women with eating disorders (e.g., anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa) demonstrates that basing self-esteem on appearance relates to decreased overall self-esteem (Geller et al, 1997;Tchanturia et al, 2002;Trottier et al, 2013); yet this study is among the rst to clarify how basing self-esteem on different forms of appearance relates to self-esteem in men. Further, past research highlights muscularity concerns prominence for men (Ganson et al, 2023;Nagata et al, 2020), yet no research has investigated the relevance of muscularity as a construct distinct from shape and weight.…”
