Shamimin: A New FlavonolC-Glycoside from Leaves ofBombax ceiba*

Abstract: Shamimin a new flavonol C-glycoside has been isolated as a pale yellow powder from the ethanolic extract of fresh, undried leaves of Bombax ceiba. Its structure has been elucidated as 2-(2,4,5-trihydroxyphenyl)-3,5,7-trihydroxy-6-C- glucopyranosyloxy-4H-1-benzopyran-4-one through extensive spectroscopic methods (IR, mass, 1H- and 13C-NMR), and 2D-NMR experiments. Shamimin showed antimicrobial activity against a few bacteria and fungi.

“…Pharmacologically the plant has been reported to have hepatic protective (Chiu et al , 1992) and hypotensive activity (Saleem et al , 1999), as well as anti-inflammatory effect (Lin et al , 1992). Phytochemical investigation has revealed the presence of a naphthol, naphthoquinones, polysaccharides, anthocyanins, shamimin, and lupeol in this plant (Seshadri et al , 1971;1973;Sankaram et al , 1981;Faizi and Ali, 1999).…”

“…Mangiferin has been isolated directly from the fresh leaves of Bombax ceiba; 1,2 however, its structure was erroneously described as flavonol-C-glucoside (shamimin), which was revised as xanthone-C-glucoside (1). 3 It has been documented in the literature that xanthone-C-glucosides are more closely related to flavonoids than to xanthones.…”

“…[4][5][6] There is a considerable interest in the antioxidant and free radical scavanging properties of medicinal plants and compounds isolated from them 7) particularly polyphenols which are a broad family of naturally occurring physiologically active nutrients. Xanthones closely related to the polyphenol family, have a remarkable effect on cardiovascular system, are antibiotic, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and also includes some of the most powerful natural antioxidants.…”

“…10,11) Various parts of B. ceiba have been claimed to cure chronic inflammation without any pharmacological studies, 12) therefore it was subjected to anti-inflammatory and analgesic testing. The present investigation on the extracts of leaves of the plant were subjected to bioassay monitored fractionation 4) which resulted in the isolation of mangiferin in substantial amounts possessing promising antioxidant and analgesic activities.…”
