Shakespeare at Work: Four Kings and Two Shrews

Abstract: This article examines three instances of the early Shakespeare at work on material provided by another dramatist, in plays in the repertory of the Queen's Men or Pembroke's Men: The Troublesome Reign of King John, King Leir and The Taming of a Shrew. In writing King John and King Lear for the Chamberlain's Men, Shakespeare takes as his starting point a play by someone else, transforming the material.
