ShakeMap-based prediction of earthquake-induced mass movements in Switzerland calibrated on historical observations

Abstract: In Switzerland, nearly all historical Mw * 6 earthquakes have induced damaging landslides, rockslides and snow avalanches that, in some cases, also resulted in damage to infrastructure and loss of lives. We describe the customisation to Swiss conditions of a globally calibrated statistical approach originally developed to rapidly assess earthquake-induced landslide likelihoods worldwide. The probability of occurrence of such earthquake-induced effects is modelled through a set of geospatial susceptibility prox… Show more

“…Generally speaking, Earthquakes of magnitude 6 and above are more likely to cause collapses and landslides. The higher the intensity, the more loose solid materials will be produced and the larger the scope of triggering debris flows will be (Cauzzi et al, 2018). In recent years, the Wenchuan earthquake (May 12, 2008), the Lushan earthquake (April 20, 2013), the Jiuzhaigou earthquake (July 7, 2017), and the Changning earthquake (June 6, 2019) all had a great impact on Ganluo County, especially the Lushan earthquake.…”

“…The most probable triggers of the slope failures in Swiss lakes are earthquake shaking or sediment overloading/excess pore water pressure (Stegmann et al 2007;Wiemer and Kopf 2017;Roesner et al 2019;Kremer et al 2020). Although Switzerland is a country with moderate seismicity where events with a moment magnitude M w ≥ 5.5 occur quite rarely (28 of such events have been identified for the past 700 years; Fäh et al 2016;Wiemer et al 2016;Cauzzi et al 2018), there are historical reports and prehistorical traces of earthquake-triggered tsunamis in Swiss lakes and Lake Lucerne in particular.…”

“…Making statements about likely locations of mass failures requires an understanding of factors and processes relevant for slope instabilities as well as their spatial variability (Fischer et al, 2012). Without knowing the local site conditions, topography is often used as a proxy for potential mass movements (e.g., Coe et al, 2004;Fernandes et al, 2004;Cauzzi et al, 2018). The Fahrböschung (Heim 1932…”
