Governments are increasingly committing to significant ecological restoration. However, the impacts of forest restoration on local hydrological services are surprisingly poorly understood. Particularly, limited information is available about the impacts of tree planting on soil infiltration processes and runoff pathways. Thus, we investigated the saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks) and preferential flow pathways in three land-cover types: (i) Active Restoration, (ii) Degraded Land, and (iii) Reference Forest, with contrasting differences in soil profile and land use history in the municipality of La Jagua de Ibirico, César department, Colombia. We conducted soil sampling, using the Beerkan method to determine Ks values. We also measured vegetation attributes (i.e., canopy cover, vegetation height, diameter at breast height, and total number of trees) and carried out three dye tracer experiments for each study site. The blue dye experiments revealed that near surface matrix infiltration was dominant for Degraded Land, while at the Active Restoration and Reference Forest, this only occurred at local surface depressions. The general infiltration pattern at the three land uses is indicated as being macropore flow with mixed interaction with the matrix and highly affected by the presence of rock fragments. The deeper infiltration patterns occur by preferential flow due to the presence of roots and rock fragments. The mean Ks for the Active Restoration (240 mm h−1) was much higher than the Ks at Degraded Land (40 mm h−1) but still considerably lower than the Reference Forest (324 mm h−1). These results indicate that top soil infiltration capacity and soil physical parameters not only directly regulate the amount of infiltration but also infiltration patterns and runoff processes, leading to lower infiltration and increased excess overland flow for Degraded Land than for other land uses.

The Beerkan infiltration experiment is carried out by inserting the ring a short depth into the soil and establishing a positive head of water on the infiltration surface for at least a part of the run. Nevertheless, the data are analyzed by assuming a fully unconfined infiltration process (ring insertion depth, d = 0 cm) and a null ponded depth of water (H = 0 cm). The influence of ring insertion and ponded water on an infiltration process of 2 h sampled every minute was tested in this numerical investigation. Five soils varying from sand to silt loam, three ring radii (5-15 cm), and the Beerkan-specific range of values for both d and H (between 0 and 1 cm) were considered. The differences between the theoretical (d = H = 0 cm) and the practical (d = H = 1 cm) setups varied from −10.4 to +8.6% for the mean infiltration rate and from −10.2 to +8.3% for the final cumulative infiltration. These differences were small, and they decreased in absolute value by considering a soil-dependent ring radius. In particular, nearly negligible differences were detected using a small ring in coarse-textured soils and a large ring in fine-textured soils. In the coarser soils, inserting the ring and establishing a ponded depth of water did not alter the estimated coefficients of the two-parameter infiltration model appreciably with the cumulative linearization method, because these coefficients differed between the theoretical and practical setups by no more than 9.2%. In fine soils, linearization could not be possible regardless of the considered setup, or it was the use of d = H = 1 cm instead of d = H = 0 cm that impeded a convincing linearization of the data. In conclusion, the good correspondence, in many circumstances, between the theoretical and the practical Beerkan infiltration experiment reinforced the interest in this simple experiment as a practical means to collect infiltration data in the field.

Our understanding of the hydrological processes in cocoa agroforests is extremely limited. Most work has focused on characterising throughfall and transpiration processes under various management approaches and climate change scenarios. However, little is currently understood about how soil water movement is driven by infiltration and hydraulic conductivity. We monitored the soil properties, soil water repellency and hydraulic conductivity in a 5-, 12-and >30-year-old cocoa plantation in the wet and dry seasons. During the wet season, repellent conditions were absent in all stands, while the hydraulic conductivity showed no significant differences among them. This suggests that stand age has little effect on water movement during the wet period. During the dry season, the soil at the 5-and 12-year-old stands became extremely repellent and was twice as severe as that of the >30-year-old plantation. It was expected that the extreme repellency in the younger stands would reduce infiltration rates; however, higher rates were recorded in the 5-and 12-yearold stands. This was likely due to the presence of large, deep soil cracks, which enhanced preferential flow. As the repellency was not significantly correlated with soil properties, we hypothesised that the high grass/sedge cover and temperatures in the 5-and 12-year-old stands enhanced it. While further research is needed to investigate the role that grass and sedges play in developing repellent conditions, managing their cover may prove beneficial for the growth and survival of young cocoa trees.
