SH-Model: A Model Based on Both System and Human Effects for Pointing Task Evaluation

Abstract: As a well-known human performance model, Fitts' law, a tool for evaluating pointing devices, has been accepted and applied for a long time in the human computer interaction field. However, doubts now exist regarding its validity. One challenging job for those who are doing research on human performance models is to resolve the problem relating to input hits' distribution (i.e., spatial constraint). We developed a new model based on temporal distribution to alter the traditional models. The new model and the tr… Show more

“…the normal distribution of end-points, which lacks theoretical and empirical foundations. Based on temporal constraint (distribution of movement time data), a new model, called SH-Model (Ren et al 2005), was presented to include system and human effects in Fitts' target acquisition tasks. Empirical analysis showed that the SH-Model is stronger than the Shannon model 2 (MacKenzie 1989) and W e model.…”

“…In this paper, we extend the works in [13,14,16] by proposing some new models based on the BoxCox transformation. Then, we introduce a Bayesian modeling method to identify and estimate the learning effects of pointing tasks in human-computer interaction.…”

“…The size of the display was 480pixels × 160pixels with 1 pixel being about 0.24 mm. Experimental software was developed with Java (see [13] for details). Twelve subjects (6 males, 6 females, aged between 20 to 22) were tested in the experiment which was of 3 × 3 within-subjects factorial design.…”
