Many changes were made in Cable ShipLong Lines to facilitate in stallation and maintenance ofSG cable and repeaters. This paper de scribes new equipment provided for the ship and modifications made to existing equipment. Both transmission equipment and cable and repeater handling facilities are discussed.
I. BACKGROUNDA significant p a r t of the development of a new undersea cable system is involved with t h e e q u i p m e n t required to install and maintain t h e system. M u c h of t h e basic work concerning cable payout and repeater handling was done as part of the earlier SD Submarine Cable System and the design of Cable Ship Long Lines.
1Even so, for the SG system, many specific changes were necessary. This paper describes the most important ones. T h e areas or conditions t h a t called for revision or new design can be summarized as follows: (i) Electrical (a) T e s t sets (b) Power feeding e q u i p m e n t (c) Transmission e q u i p m e n t (d) C o m p u t e r facility (e) Repeater monitoring set (ii) Environmental (a ) R e p e a t e r t e m p e r a t u r e control a n d m e a s u r e m e n t (b) Cable t e m p e r a t u r e control and m e a s u r e m e n t (Hi) Physical and Mechanical (a) Increased cable tensions and cable size 2523
