Sexually Transmitted Infections

Abstract

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that there are approximately 19 million new cases of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) each year in the United States. There are over 30 pathogens that can be transmitted sexually including those that are bacterial (e.g., chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis) and viral (e.g., herpes, human papillomavirus, human immunodeficiency virus). Adolescents and young adults aged 15–24 years are at the highest risk of acquiring STIs and as of the mid‐2010s account for nearly half of all new STI cases each year in the United States. There are group disparities in STI rates that cannot be explained by individual‐level behaviors and instead societal influences must be examined.
