Sexually dimorphic distribution of galanin in the preoptic area of red salmon, Oncorhynchus nerka

Abstract: A sexually dimorphic distribution of galanin in the preoptic region of the molly and goldfish has previously been demonstrated. Females of these species lack galanin-immunoreactive perikarya in the preoptic nucleus. In contrast, we have found, in female red salmon, galanin-immunoreactive neurons in the magnocellular preoptic nucleus, located far lateral to the preoptic recess, whereas many immunoreactive fibers are present in the preoptic area in both genders. In addition, many immunoreactive neurons have been… Show more

“…In contrast to these studies, Jadhao and Meyer (2000) did not observe any GAL cells in the NPO of red salmon males, whereas in females GAL-ir perikarya were noted in the NPO, located far lateral to the preoptic recess. As the NPO is known to be involved in the control of hormonal regulation by the pituitary influencing sexual mat- uration in teleosts (Peter and Fryer 1983), it is unlikely that NPO (which contains GAL-like peptide) is responsible for such functions in males (Prasada Rao et al 1996;Cornbrooks and Parsons 1991a) but not in females (Jadhao and Meyer 2000) or vice versa. So far, sexual dimorphism of GAL distribution has been reported in three species of teleosts only (see above), and the authors described contradictory results.…”

“…In A. anableps, we have been able to distinguish as many as ten subgroups. Nevertheless, the present and all other investigations have emphasized the fact that GAL-ir neurons are primarily distributed within the subdivisions of NPO and NLT (Batten et al 1990b;Cornbrooks and Parsons 1991a;Holmqvist and Ekström 1991;Yamamoto et al 1992;Magliulo-Cepriano et al 1993;Anglade et al 1994;Prasada Rao et al 1996;Jadhao and Meyer 2000). In addition, all species investigated show the presence of intensely-ir GAL fiber projections in the NPO and NLT in both sexes.…”
