Sexual transmission of human papillomaviruses in heterosexual and male homosexual couples, studied by DNA hybridisation.

Abstract: and the §Department ofBiochemistry, Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School, London SUMMARY The prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) 6, 11, 16, and 18 in 36 heterosexual couples and seven male homosexual couples with genital warts was investigated for evidence ofsexual transmission of genital HPV. The prevalence of virus type and number of copies of viral genome equivalents/cell in the lesions were assessed, and the factors influencing transmission analysed. Our results show that HPV 6 and, to a less… Show more

“…34 The exact infectivity of each of these states is unclear, and clinicians cannot tell patients definitively whether they are more infectious when warts are present or whether treatment results in a reduction in risk for the transmission of HPV to sex partners. 34 Infectivity of HPV is associated with detectable viral load, 31,32,38 and the treatment of warts has been shown to reduce tissue viral load. Many clinicians have therefore hypothesized that treating anogenital warts decreases infectivity.…”

“…Such groups are likely to be biased samples and may not reflect the general population prevalence and concordance rates. Most studies evaluating concordance have focused exclusively on genital infection between heterosexual partners who also had either HPV infection or an HPV-related disease rather than on healthy couples [41][42][43][44][45] . The outcome of these investigations is one of mixed results in the degree of concordance between partners.…”
