There has been a recent global increase in sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV among adults aged over 45. Limited evidence exists regarding middle-aged adults' knowledge of STIs other than HIV. This qualitative study sought to understand middle-aged adults' knowledge of STIs within a socio-cultural context. Individual interviews, based on a life-course approach, were conducted with 31 recently sexually active heterosexual men and women. Participants were aged between 45 and 65 and of mixed relationship status (14 were single, 17 in a relationship). Thematic analysis identified four key findings, including: "engagement with STI-related knowledge"; "general knowledge of STIs"; "learning about STIs from children"; and "limited application of knowledge". The findings allow insight into a neglected area, and indicate that socio-cultural factors influence middle-aged adults' STI-related knowledge acquisition throughout the life course. These are important implications for the prevention of STIs, particularly in addressing the on-going stigmatisation of STIs in older age groups.

The authors comment some recent articles on the detected positive associations between sexual activity and results of tests of cognitive performance achieving by older people. They indicate the data collected in the course of "Wave 6" of The English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA). Text of the article:Recently we would like to publish the paper sub title: "The trial of the evaluation of the sexual selfconsciousness of older people". The reviewer wrote that: "Title does not make sense", but among other remarks he indicated the paper, which really was missing among our reference publications, it means the article of Hayley Wright and Rebecca A. Jenks entitled: "Sex on the brain! Associations between sexual activity and cognitive function in older age" [1]. The authors of this article take advantage of data collected in the course of "Wave 6" of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA), a nationally representative panel survey that gathers data on health, lifestyle and socioeconomic variables in adults over the age of 50 years. The questionnaire for the cohort "Wave 6 of ELSA" includes first time the questions pertaining to sexual relationships, and therefore enable the investigation of associations between sexual activity and cognitive function of older people. The authors of the quoted article selected from many questions of the used Sexual Relationships and Activities Questionnaire (SRA-Q), only a simple specific criterion enabling to distinguish older adults who were sexually active from those who were not. They assumed that sexual activity could include: intercourse, masturbation, petting or fondling. The dependant variables in this study were scores from cognitive tests of recall and a number sequencing. In the recall task, respondents heard a list of 10 everyday words and were asked to recall them immediately away and after a short delay. Wrigh et al. found that "there were significant associations between sexual activity and number sequencing and recall in men". The authors assumed that these parameters are good enough measurements of cognitive performance. They argue that "sexual activity is associated with higher scores on tests of memory and executive function, in adults aged 50-89".

The issue of seniors' sexuality, especially the aspect of sexual activity undertaken by people considered "old" is usually met with silence or even condemned. The stereotypical assumptions are that with age a person's needs associated with feeling and realizing their own sexuality dissipate, and seniors are perceived as asexual beings.Only in the last decades of the XX century did this area of "taboo" become the subject of in-depth scientific interest and research. The average life span is increasing, and as research shows, so is the number of people who are sexually active and satisfied with intercourse at an elderly age. For hundreds of years, in Western culture, sexual health was equated with reproductive ability. The contemporary concept of health emphasizes that it is a value which allows a person to realize aspirations regardless of age.This article focuses on the content of guides which bring up the importance of seniors' sexual health. The aestheticization characteristic of the late modern period forces a deconstruction of the concept of old age. In the rhetoric of the everyday and the narcissistic style of the realm of experts, experiencing old age simultaneously becomes a source of pleasure, as well as frustration on the road to an individual's self-realization and self-creation.
