Sexual Enhancement Groups for Dysfunctional Women: An Evaluation

Abstract: Three groups of women with sexual dysfunction were evaluated pretreatment and posttreatment. Two of the groups (mixed sexual dysfunctions and primary orgasmic dysfunction) did not involve partner participation, while the third group (mixed sexual dysfunctions) included partners on two occasions. Results for all groups were similar. Of the 16 women involved, 14 became reliably orgasmic through self-stimulation. Generalization of orgasm to partner stimulation or coitus was less reliable. “…For the three groups of preorgasmic women reported here, overall success rates were lower than those reported elsewhere (e.g., Leiblum & Ersner-Hershfield, 1977;McMullen & Rosen, 1979;Riley & Riley, 1978;Wallace & Barbach, 1974). Factors which may help account for this include: (a) Groups met for 8 sessions rather than 10.…”

“…An intervention, first introduced by LoPiccolo and Lobitz (1972), based on improving sexual skills through directed masturbation training is often considered the treatment of choice for lifelong orgasmic disorder (Rosen & Leiblum, 1995), especially for clients motivated to achieve orgasm via sexual activities with their partners (Leiblum & Ersner-Hershfield, 1977). The treatment protocol is clear and replicable, involving nine sequential steps that include education and self-exploration, directed masturbation, sexual fantasy and imagery, and sensate focus (first individually and then with a partner).…”

“…The therapeutic techniques used in manualized treatments for FSDs also tend to overlap considerably [55]. For these reasons, the use of manualized treatments aimed at mixed FSDs is supported, and studies investigating manualized treatments for mixed FSDs have found positive results [24,27,[30][31][32]36,39,41,47].…”

“…Research studies into the use of manualized treatments for women with sexual dysfunctions are outlined in Table 1[16–51]. The studies show variability in many characteristics, and these will be discussed in more detail after a brief discussion of the history of manualized treatment for FSDs.…”
