“…The microsomal enzyme that conjugates testosterone to fatty acids has been designated as acyl coenzyme A:testosterone acyltransferase (ATAT). Since these initial observations, this same process for regulating free hormone levels has been documented in other gastropods for both testosterone and 17b-estradiol (Janer et al 2005c(Janer et al , 2006bSantos et al 2005;Sternberg et al 2008a). Collectively, these metabolic studies indicate that gastropods are capable of biosynthesizing and biotransforming the sex steroids that are present in their tissues.…”

“…Vertebrate-type sex steroids including estrogens (estrone, 17b-estradiol, estriol) and androgens (androstenedione, androsterone, dehydroepiandrosterone) have been definitively identified in gastropods using gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) (Le Guellec et al 1987). In addition, sex steroids have been quantified via less-specific immunoassays (e.g., radioimmunoassay) in multiple tissues of gastropods (Bose et al 1997;Gooding and LeBlanc 2004;Janer et al 2006b;Kavaliers et al 2000;Le Guellec et al 1987;Sternberg et al 2008a;Takeda 1980). However, the mere detection of sex steroids in a gastropod provides no insight as to whether these biomolecules actually function as hormones in these organisms.…”

“…MT did not affect the fecundity measured as number of egg masses produced, but at 100 ng/L, MT exposure triggered degenerative processes of the albumen and prostate glands (Czech et al, 2001). Females of the freshwater ramshorn snail Marisa cornuarietis exposed to 300 ng/L MT had a significantly higher incidence of imposex than controls (Janer et al, 2006). Our results showed that MT did not cause toxic adverse effects on the invertebrate B. glabrata at the exposure time.…”

“…In discussing their results, the authors do not refer to any kind of interference of ethanol in these assays. Janer et al (2006) tested the effects of testosterone on reproduction of the freshwater ramshorn snail Marisa cornuarietis. Testosterone was added in absolute ethanol at a final concentration in water of 0.001%, and snails were exposed to these agents for 50, 100, and 150 days.…”

“…In aquatic animals, TBT is known to induce the development of male sex characteristics in females, particularly in several gastropods (Hagger et al 2006;Horiguchi 2006;Horiguchi et al 2006;Janer et al 2006;Viglino et al 2006), thus causing sterility. It also makes aquatic animals more vulnerable to infectious diseases (Anderson et al 1996) and has deleterious effects on oyster growth and reproduction (Alzieu 1991;Gagné et al 2003;Inoue et al 2004Inoue et al , 2006aInoue et al , 2006bInoue et al , 2007.…”
