“…Moreover, compounds which block the aromatization of androgens to oestrogens inhibit testosterone-induced mating behaviour in castrated rats (Christensen & Clemens, 1975;Morali, Larsson & Beyer, 1977) whilst this inhibition can be overcome by the concurrent administration of oestrogens (Morali et al 1977). Further evidence for the hypothesis that oestrogens are the agents responsible for inducing male mating behaviour has been provided by the demonstration that non-aromatizable an¬ drogens, such as 5a-dihydrotestosterone, are ineffective in eliciting mating behaviour in castrated rats (McDonald, Beyer, Newton, Brien, Baker, Tan, Sampson, Kitching, Greenhill & Pritchard, 1970;Parrott, 1975) and golden hamsters (Christensen, Coniglio, Paup & Clemens, 1973). In addition, several anti-oestrogens are able to prevent the behavioural response of castrated rats to testosterone treatment (Luttge, 1975;Beyer, Morali, Naftolin, Larsson & Pérez-Palacios, 1976).…”
