Sexual alteration in antioxidant response and esterase profile in Hyalomma anatolicum anatolicum (Acari: Ixodidae) ticks

Abstract: The objective of the study was to reveal physiological link between sex specific engorgement pattern and evading mechanism of ticks against oxidative stress as well as acaricides. Quantitative determination of nitric oxide radical scavenging, superoxide dismutase activity and reduced glutathione (GSH) concentrations in salivary gland and gut extracts of male and female (Acari: Ixodidae) ticks established significant variation in antioxidant responses between two sexes of the ticks. Higher activity of these ant… Show more

“…Obligate blood-sucking ectoparasites such as ticks respond to the oxidative stress and neutralize the ROS generated from blood meal digestion to avoid tissue damage using different antioxidant defense mechanisms 2426 . Inorganic polyphosphates regulate the generation of ROS during embryogenesis in Rhipicephalus microplus ticks by increasing the activity of superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione reductase, providing evidence for the function of different enzymes in mt ROS metabolism in tick embryos 27 .…”

“…For some species, its non-coding RNAs from Genbank need to be supplied as reference for this analysis. [1] to analyze the expression and distribution of sRNA tags across the genome. If the genome sequence of the species is not available, the corresponding EST or one specified species with available genome sequence as the reference will also work.…”

“…Activity of superoxide dismutase, nitric oxide radicals and reduced glutathione (GSH) concentrations in the salivary cocktail of male and female H. anatolicum represents the antioxidant defense which is to tackle the oxidative response presented by host during feeding (Francischetti et al 2009;Wu et al 2010;Ghosh et al 2014;Ghosh et al, 2017).…”
