Sexual Activity During Pregnancy in Taiwan: A Qualitative Study

Abstract: BackgroundPregnancy is a special period in a woman's life that involves physical and mental changes. “…These changes are the result of the decreases of woman's self-confidence and selfesteem; body image may be adversely affected and cause sexual dysfunction (SD). 4 Although earlier studies pointed out that sexual activity in normal pregnant women has no significant adverse effects, 1 fear of harming fetus or mother during intercourse, 2,5-12 belief that having sex during pregnancy period can provoke miscarriage, 5,10,11,13 preterm birth 5,[9][10][11][12] or preterm membrane rupture 13 and belief that coitus during pregnancy is religiously unaccepted 7,10 were found as the most important reasons for decreasing the sexual relationships within the couples.
