Sex Steroid Hormones as a Balancing Factor in Oral Host Microbiome Interactions

Abstract: Sex steroid hormones (SSH) are cholesterol-derived molecules. They are secreted into saliva and enter the oral cavity, triggering physiological responses from oral tissues, with possible clinical implications, such as gingival inflammation and bleeding. SSH and hormonal changes affect not only oral host cells but also oral microorganisms.Historically, most research has focused on the effect of hormonal changes on specific bacteria and yeasts. Recently a broader effect of SSH on oral microorganisms was suggeste… Show more

“…In relation to periodontal health, the physiological and hormonal changes during pregnancy exhibit a direct impact on periodontal tissues [ 48 ]. P. intermedia and P. nigrescens can take up and utilize sex steroid hormones (estrogen and progesterone) as substitutes for vitamin K, the essential growth factor, in temperature- and concentration-dependent manners [ 49 ].…”

“…P. intermedia is closely related to periodontal disease ( Braga et al., 2010 ). In young women, due to fluctuations in SHH levels, the biological behavior of P. intermedia is also affected ( Fteita et al., 2014 ; Cornejo Ulloa et al., 2021 ). Estradiol enhances the toxicity of P. intermedia , which is related to one of its virulence factors: protease dipeptidyl peptidase IV ( Fteita et al., 2015 ).…”

“…Sex steroid hormones (SHHs) are cholesterol-derived molecules secreted into saliva and which reach oral tissues such as the gums and periodontium ( Cornejo Ulloa et al., 2021 ). The prevalence and severity of periodontitis is lower in females in most age groups compared with those in males, which may be related to different SHH levels in males and females ( Albandar, 2002 ).…”

“…During pregnancy, the surge of hormonal levels triggers oral tissue responses ( Cornejo Ulloa et al, 2021 ), which means changes in the composition or abundance of oral microorganisms occur relative to postpartum or non-pregnant status. This shift may lead to a potentially more hazardous microbial community ( Zi et al, 2014 ).…”
